Abstract

A tetragonal ring shape aperture is formed in the common electrode on one substrate and a cross shape aperture is formed at the position corresponding to the center of the tetragonal ring shape aperture in the pixel electrode on the other substrate. A liquid crystal layer between two electrodes are divided to four domains where the directors of the liquid crystal layer have different angles when a voltage is applied to the electrodes. The directors in adjacent domains make a right angle. The tetragonal ring shape aperture is broken at midpoint of each side of the tetragon, and the width of the aperture decreases as goes from the bent point to the edge. Wide viewing angle is obtained by four domains where the directors of the liquid crystal layer indicate different directions, disclination is removed and luminance increases.

Claims (17)

1. A liquid crystal display (LCD), comprising:

a first substrate having a first surface and a second surface;

a second substrate having a first surface and a second surface, the first surface of the second substrate facing the first surface of the first substrate;

a first electrode formed on a first surface of the first substrate and having a plurality of first domain dividers;

a second electrode formed on the first surface of the second substrate and having a plurality of second domain dividers;

a first polarizer formed on the second surface of the first substrate;

a second polarizer formed on the second surface of the second substrate; and

a pixel region divided into a plurality of domains by the first domain dividers and the second domain dividers,

wherein a length direction of each domain is tilted at an angle between about 35° and about 55° with respect to polarizing directions of the first polarizer and the second polarizer.

2. The LCD of claim 1 , wherein either the first domain dividers or the second domain dividers are apertures.

3. The LCD of claim 1 , further comprising a first compensation film formed between the first substrate and the first polarizer.

4. The LCD of claim 3 , wherein the first compensation film is a biaxial compensation film.

5. The LCD of claim 3 , wherein a slow axis of the first compensation film is in parallel or perpendicular to the polarizing directions of the first polarizer film and the second polarizer film.

6. The LCD of claim 3 , further comprising a second compensation film formed between the second substrate and the second polarizer.

7. The LCD of claim 6 , wherein the first compensation film is an a-plate compensation film, and the second compensation film is a c-plate compensation film.

8. The LCD of claim 7 , wherein a slow axis of the a-plate compensation film is in parallel or perpendicular to the polarizing directions of the first polarizer and the second polarizer.

9. The LCD of claim 1 , wherein the first domain dividers are protrusions.
