Abstract

The present invention advantageously provides a method and system for cryogenically ablating large areas of tissue within the left atrium. In an exemplary embodiment a cryotherapy device includes a catheter body, a proximal end and a distal end; a first lumen; a second lumen; and an ablation element expandable from a first diameter to a second diameter, the ablation element having a surface portion that conforms to the uneven surface topography of the cardiac tissue. The ablation element can include one or more deformable balloon and/or flexible elements. The surface of the balloon can further be shaped by regulation of pressure within the one or more balloons. In an exemplary method, a tissue ablation device is provided and tissue in the left atrium is ablated with the device, whereby the ablation is created by freezing tissue.

Claims (16)

1. A method for modifying the electrophysiological properties of cardiac tissue comprising the steps of:

providing a tissue ablation device having an ablation element at a distal end of the ablation device and an elastic tip affixed to and integral with the distal end of the ablation element;

providing surgical access to the heart; positioning the ablation device within an internal chamber of the heart; and ablating tissue; and

wherein the elastic tip is a thermally conductive gel.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of providing surgical access to the heart includes making a subxyphoid incision.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of providing surgical access to the heart includes making a thoracotomy incision.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of providing surgical access to the heart includes a sternotomy.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of positioning the ablation device within an internal chamber of the heart includes inserting the ablation device through a pulmonary vein.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of positioning the ablation device within an internal chamber of the heart includes inserting the ablation device through the aorta.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of positioning the ablation device within an internal chamber of the heart includes inserting the ablation device through the septum wall.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of positioning the ablation device within an internal chamber of the heart includes inserting the ablation device through the left atrial appendage.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the ablation element is a cryoablation element, the cryoablation element including an inner balloon disposed within an outer balloon, wherein the outer balloon is impermeable.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of ablating tissue includes the creation of one or more overlapping lesions.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of ablating tissue further includes ablating tissue in a pulmonary vein.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of ablating tissue includes the step of creating two or more substantially circular lesions.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of ablating tissue includes the step of creating a contiguous lesion between the mitral valve annulus and a pulmonary vein.
