Abstract

Plasmons on a waveguide may deliver energy to photocatalyze a reaction. The waveguide or other energy carrier may be configured to carry electromagnetic energy and generate plasmon energy at one or more locations proximate to the waveguide, where the plasmon energy may react chemically with a medium or interaction material.

Claims (46)

1. A system comprising:

A first waveguide, said first waveguide being configured to carry energy from a first location to a second location;

A plasmon generator coupled to said first waveguide; and

An interaction material proximate to said second location and responsive to said plasmons to react chemically;

Wherein the interaction material includes a photocatalyst;

Wherein the photocatalyst includes a band gap; and

Wherein the plasmons have a first energy range, and wherein the band gap is substantially within the first energy range.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the energy carried by the waveguide includes plasmon energy.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the energy carried by the waveguide includes electromagnetic energy.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the plasmon generator is at the first location.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the plasmon generator is at the second location.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the plasmon generator is at a third location, said third location being different from the first location and the second location.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the interaction material is configured to be sufficiently proximate to the plasmons to interact directly with the plasmons.

8. The system of claim 1 , further including a converter configured to convert the plasmons into electromagnetic energy, wherein the interaction material is configured to be responsive to the electromagnetic energy to react chemically.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the photocatalyst includes a semiconductor.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the semiconductor includes titanium dioxide (TiO2).

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the waveguide is configured to convert the energy to plasmons.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the plasmon generator includes one or more nanoparticles.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the plasmon generator includes a conductive layer, wherein a portion of said conductive layer is in intimate contact with the waveguide.

14. A system comprising:

A first waveguide, said first waveguide being configured to carry energy from a first location to a second location;

A plasmon generator coupled to said first waveguide; and

An interaction material proximate to said second location and responsive to said plasmons to react chemically;

A converter configured to convert the plasmons into electromagnetic energy, wherein the interaction material is configured to be responsive to the electromagnetic energy to react chemically; and

wherein the interaction material includes a photocatalyst having a first band gap, and wherein the electromagnetic energy has a first energy range, said first band gap being substantially within the first energy range.

15. A system comprising:

A first waveguide, said first waveguide being configured to carry energy from a first location to a second location;

A plasmon generator coupled to said first waveguide; and

An interaction material proximate to said second location and responsive to said plasmons to react chemically;

A converter configured to convert the plasmons into electromagnetic energy, wherein the interaction material is configured to be responsive to the electromagnetic energy to react chemically; and

wherein the converter includes a defect in the first waveguide.

16. A system comprising:

A first waveguide, said first waveguide being configured to carry energy from a first location to a second location;

A plasmon generator coupled to said first waveguide; and

An interaction material proximate to said second location and responsive to said plasmons to react chemically;

Wherein the first waveguide includes a first inner region and a first outer region, said first outer region having a first inner surface and a first outer surface; and

wherein a portion of the first inner region has an inner dielectric constant and a portion of the first outer region has an outer dielectric constant, wherein the real part of said inner dielectric constant has a sign opposite that of the real part of said outer dielectric constant.

17. The system of claim 16 further including a second material in intimate contact with the first outer surface, wherein said second material includes the interaction material.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein a portion of the first outer region has an outer dielectric constant having a real part and a portion of the second material has a second dielectric constant having a real part, wherein the real part of said outer dielectric constant has a sign opposite that of the real part of said second dielectric constant.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein the first outer surface is configured to support the plasmons.

20. The system of claim 18 further including a third outer region proximate to the second material, said third outer region including a photocatalyst.

21. The system of claim 16 wherein the first outer region substantially surrounds the first inner region.

22. The system of claim 16 wherein the thickness of the first outer region varies substantially periodically.
