Abstract

An engine guard for a motorcycle is made so that it will mount onto a motorcycle frame and has horizontally extending rail sections on opposite sides of the frame. Foot pegs are mounted at the outer ends of the horizontally extending sections. The foot pegs are positioned on opposite sides of the motorcycle and will pivot about a generally horizontal axis from a deployed position where they extend outwardly from the horizontal rail sections to a stowed position wherein the foot pegs are nested into a recess provided in the top of the respective horizontal rail section. The foot pegs include anti-slip surfaces. The stowed position moves the foot pegs inwardly, and provides a surface for supporting the feet of a rider. When the pegs are extended outwardly, the feet on the pegs are spaced at a greater distance from the center plane of the motorcycle than when the foot pegs are in the stowed position.

Claims (10)

1. A guard for mounting onto the frame of a motorcycle, said guard comprising a generally horizontal rail section having an inner end supportable on the frame, and an outer end spaced from the frame, a support for the outer end of the generally horizontal rail section, the support including:

an upwardly extending section joined to the outer end of the generally horizontal rail section and an inwardly extending section joined to the upwardly extending section and having an inner end supportable on the frame; and

a foot peg pivotally mounted to the guard about a generally horizontal axis and pivotable to extend outwardly beyond the generally horizontal rail section and the upwardly extending section of the support in a first position, and adapted to be pivoted to a stowed position in which the foot peg folds inwardly to overlap at least a portion of the guard.

2. The guard of claim 1 , wherein said horizontal rail section has an upper side forming a foot support when the foot peg is pivoted to its stowed position.

3. The guard of claim 1 , wherein a second frame section is provided and extends upwardly from the inner end of the generally horizontal rail section adjacent to the frame and is securable to the frame.

4. The guard of claim 1 , wherein said foot peg has a plurality of grooves defined in the surface thereof that extend generally perpendicular to the pivot axis, said grooves being on a side of the foot peg that is facing upwardly in its first position.

5. The guard of claim 1 wherein the section of a guard to which the foot peg is pivotally mounted has a recess of size to at least partially receive the foot peg when the foot peg folds to overlap at least a portion of the guard.

6. The guard of claim 1 , wherein the generally horizontal rail section inner end is joined to a center frame support, said center frame support extending upwardly from the inner end of the generally horizontal rail section and having a portion adapted to be secured to a motorcycle frame.

7. An engine guard and foot peg combination for a motorcycle comprising a guard framework having a pair of strut members attachable to lower portions of a frame of a motorcycle on opposite sides of the motorcycle frame, said strut members having portions that extend outwardly from a center plane of the motorcycle and having generally upright portions having upper ends, a pair of horizontal rail portions having rail outer ends joined to upper ends of the upright portions and said horizontal rail portions extending inwardly from the rail outer ends toward rail inner ends of the horizontal rail portions adjacent the motorcycle frame and being supported on the motorcycle frame in use, and a pair of foot pegs, one mounted on each side of the guard framework and movable from a deployed position wherein the foot pegs extend a distance outwardly beyond the rail outer ends of the horizontal rail portions to a stowed position wherein the foot pegs nest on portions of the guard framework and do not extend substantially outwardly from outward boundaries of the guard framework.

8. A guard for mounting onto the frame of a motorcycle to extend laterally outwardly therefrom on opposite sides of the motorcycle frame, said guard comprising a pair of laterally extending rails extending laterally from a center plane of the guard, and a center rail support portion joined to inner ends of the respective laterally extending rails and adapted to be secured to a forward portion of the motorcycle frame, the guard further comprising end rail supports for outer ends of the laterally extending rails, said end rail supports having generally upright extending sections connected to the outer ends of the laterally extending rails, respectively, the end rail supports having inwardly extending portions joined to the upwardly extending portions, the inwardly extending portions extending toward the center plane and being adapted to be secured to a motorcycle frame at a level below the center rail support portion for the inner ends of the laterally extending rails, and foot pegs pivotally mounted about generally horizontal axes to the guard and positioned to be on opposite sides of the center plane, said foot pegs being pivotable between a position where they extend outwardly from respective lateral sides of the guard a sufficient amount of support feet thereon, and pivotable to a stowed position wherein the foot pegs at least partially fit into recesses formed in portions of the guard adjacent the horizontal axes, such that the foot pegs do not project laterally outwardly beyond the guard a substantial distance when in the stowed position.
