Abstract

According to one aspect, a stimulation system is provided for electrically stimulating a predetermined site to treat a neurological condition. The system includes an electrical stimulation lead adapted for implantation into a subcutaneous area in communication with a predetermined site, wherein the site is neuronal tissue that is associated with C2/C3 dermatome area, or stimulating cervical nerve roots and/or stimulating cranial nerves and/or stimulating any area associated with the occipital area. The stimulation lead includes one or more stimulation electrodes adapted to be positioned in the predetermined site. The system also includes a stimulation source that generates the stimulation pulses for transmission to the one or more stimulation electrodes of the stimulation lead to deliver the stimulation pulses to the predetermined site to treat a neurological disorder or condition.

Claims (26)

1. A method of treating a neurological disorder in a subject comprising the steps of:

surgically implanting a probe in a C2 dermatome/C3 dermatome area such that the probe is below the skin and above the skull in the C2 dermatome/C3 dermatome area;

coupling the probe to a pulse generator; and

operating the pulse generator to generate a stimulation pulse that stimulates the C2/C3 dermatome area thereby treating the neurological disorder that is selected from the group consisting of traumatic brain injury (TBI), immune-mediated disorder, eating or obesity disorder and mood or anxiety disorder.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the probe is an electrode.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the electrode is percutaneous lead.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the electrode is a laminotomy, paddle, or surgical lead. generator are contained in one unit.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the electrode and the pulse generator are contained in one unit.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the probe is a magnetic probe.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electrical stimulation pulse that is delivered to the C2/C3 dermatome area comprises an amplitude in the range of about 2 mA to about 100 mA, a frequency in the range of about 3 Hz to about 50 Hz, and a pulse width in the range of about 5 μs to about 100 μs.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the efficacy of the treatment increases according to the amplitude of the stimulation pulses.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the neurological disorder is TBI.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein an electrical stimulation system to treat TBI comprises an amplitude in the range of about 3 mA to about 15 mA, a frequency in the range of about 4 Hz to about 30 Hz, and a pulse width in the range of about 20 μs to about 60μ.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the neurological disorder is a mood or anxiety disorder.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the mood or anxiety disorder is depression.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the neurological disorder is an immune-mediated disorder.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the immune-mediated disorder is rheumatoid arthritis, Chron's disease, irritable bowel syndrome or lupus.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the neurological disorder is an eating or obesity disorder.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the probe is positioned within the C2 dermatome.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the probe is positioned within the occipital area.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the probe is positioned at the back of the patient's head at about the level of the ear.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the probe is positioned within the subcutaneous tissue of the C2 dermatome above the periosteum.

20. A method of treating a neurological disorder in a subject comprising:

surgically implanting a probe in the subcutaneous tissue of an occipital area of the subject such that the probe is below the skin and superior to the periosteum;

coupling the probe to a pulse generator; and

operating the pulse generator to generate a stimulation pulse that stimulates the occipital area thereby treating the neurological disorder that is selected from the group consisting of traumatic brain injury (TBI), immune-mediated disorder, eating or obesity disorder and mood or anxiety disorder.
