Abstract

A vascular access port system including means for detecting and indicating the presence or absence of a needle. The detecting and indicating means may be carried in whole or in part by one of or both of the needle and/or the vascular access port. The detecting and indicating means may utilize a conductive needle, a mechanical switch, a magnetic switch, a Hall effect sensor, an electric field, a magnetic field, or an inductor, for example, for detection purposes. The vascular access port system permits the practitioner to confirm that the needle has been correctly inserted into the VAP, and notifies the patient and/or practitioner if the needle has been accidentally withdrawn.

Claims (28)

1. A system comprising:

a vascular access port including a portal housing containing an internal reservoir with first and second openings, a self-sealing septum disposed in the first opening, and a catheter extending from the portal housing, the catheter defining a lumen extending therethrough in fluid communication with the reservoir via the second opening;

a magnetic needle;

a Hall effect sensor comprising a plurality of Hall effect sensor connections, the Hall effect sensor producing a potential difference across the Hall effect sensor connections in response to an experienced magnetic field; and

a detecting circuit electrically connected to the Hall effect sensor connections so as to detect the presence or absence of the magnetic needle in the reservoir.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein detecting circuit is connected to an infusion pump and provides feedback thereto.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detecting circuit generates a detection signal indicative of a proximity of the needle to the reservoir.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a magnet.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the magnet is carried by the needle.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the detecting circuit generates a detection signal when the Hall effect sensor is in close proximity to the magnet, and wherein the proximity is indicative of the needle extending into the reservoir.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the detecting circuit generates a detection signal in response to a potential difference across the Hall effect sensor connections.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the detecting circuit includes a comparator that compares the potential difference across the Hall effect sensor connections to a threshold signal value that is indicative of the needle extending into the reservoir, and

the detecting circuit generates an insertion signal when the potential difference across the Hall effect sensor connections exceeds the threshold signal value.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the Hall effect sensor is incorporated into a wall of the reservoir.

10. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a permanent magnet attached to the needle.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the needle is rendered magnetic by a permanent magnet.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the needle that is rendered magnetic by a coil producing an electro-magnet.

13. A vascular access port system for detecting the presence or absence of a needle, the system comprising:

a vascular access port including a portal housing containing an internal reservoir with first and second openings, a self-sealing septum disposed in the first opening, and a catheter extending from the portal housing, the catheter defining a lumen extending therethrough in fluid communication with the reservoir via the second opening;

a Hall effect sensor incorporated into a wall of the reservoir;

a needle generating a magnetic field; and

a detecting circuit connected to the Hall effect sensor, the detecting circuit generating a detection signal in response to changes in a potential difference across the Hall effect sensor.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the needle is rendered magnetic by a permanent magnet.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the potential difference across the Hall effect sensor changes when the Hall effect sensor is exposed to the magnetic field produced by the needle.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the potential difference across the Hall effect sensor changes when the needle is in close proximity to the Hall effect sensor.

17. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a permanent magnet carried by the needle.

18. The system of claim 13 , wherein the needle and a coil produce an electro-magnet.
