Joint resurfacing orthopaedic implant and associated method
View Patent ↗An orthopaedic implant includes a porous structure made of a type I collagen matrix having at least one sheet of a naturally occurring extracellular matrix secured thereto. Methods of making and using such an implant are also disclosed.
1. An orthopaedic implant, comprising:
a self-assembled porous structure comprising a collagen type I matrix, wherein the self-assembled porous structure contains 75% collagen type I in its native α-helical structure, and
at least one sheet of naturally occurring submucosal matrix secured to the self-assembled porous structure.
2. The orthopaedic implant of claim 1 , wherein:
the at least one sheet of naturally occurring submucosal matrix comprises a first sheet of naturally occurring submucosal matrix and a second sheet of naturally occurring submucosal matrix, and
the self-assembled porous structure is sandwiched between the first sheet of naturally occurring submucosal matrix and the second sheet of naturally occurring submucosal matrix.
3. The orthopaedic implant of claim 2 , wherein:
the first sheet of naturally occurring submucosal matrix comprises a sheet of small intestinal submucosa (SIS) and
the second sheet of naturally occurring extracellular matrix comprises a sheet of small intestinal submucosa (SIS).
4. The orthopaedic implant of claim 1 , wherein:
the at least one sheet of naturally occurring submucosal matrix comprises a first plurality of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix and a second plurality of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix, and
the self-assembled porous structure is sandwiched between the first plurality of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix and the second plurality of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix.
5. The orthopaedic implant of claim 4 , wherein:
the first plurality of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix comprises a plurality of sheets of SIS, and
the second plurality of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix comprises a plurality of sheets of SIS.
6. The orthopaedic implant of claim 1 , wherein:
the at least one sheet of naturally occurring submucosal matrix comprises a first number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix and a second number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix, the first number of sheets being greater than the second number of sheets, and
the self-assembled porous structure is sandwiched between the first number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix and the second number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix.
7. The orthopaedic implant of claim 6 , wherein:
the first number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix comprises a number of sheets of SIS, and
the second number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix comprises a number of sheets of SIS.
8. The orthopaedic implant of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of indentations formed in an outer surface of the implant.
9. The orthopaedic implant of claim 1 , wherein:
the at least one sheet of naturally occurring submucosal matrix comprises a first number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix and a second number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix,
the self-assembled porous structure is sandwiched between the first number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix and the second number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix, and
the first number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix has a plurality of indentations formed therein.
10. The orthopaedic implant of claim 9 , wherein:
the first number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix comprises a number of sheets of SIS, and
the second number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix comprises a number of sheets of SIS.
11. The orthopaedic implant of claim 1 , further comprising a bioactive agent.
12. An orthopaedic device, comprising:
a resorbable orthopaedic implant configured to resurface a joint, the resorbable orthopaedic implant having a self-assembled porous structure comprising a collagen type I matrix, wherein the self-assembled structure contains 75% collagen type I in its native α-helical structure, and
the resorbable orthopaedic implant has a plurality of indentations on a first surface thereof.
13. The orthopaedic device of claim 12 , wherein the resorbable orthopaedic implant has a plurality of protrusions on a second surface thereof at locations corresponding with the locations of the plurality of indentations on the first surface.
14. The orthopaedic implant of claim 12 , wherein the resorbable orthopaedic implant comprises a naturally occurring submucosal matrix.
15. The orthopaedic implant of claim 12 , wherein the resorbable orthopaedic implant comprises:
at least one sheet of naturally occurring submucosal matrix secured to the self-assembled porous structure.
16. The orthopaedic implant of claim 12 , wherein the resorbable orthopaedic implant comprises:
a number of sheets of naturally occurring submucosal matrix sandwiching the self-assembled porous structure.
17. The orthopaedic implant of claim 12 , wherein:
the orthopaedic implant comprises an inner radial area and an outer radial area,
a first number of the indentations are positioned in the inner radial area,
a second, greater number of the indentions are positioned in the outer radial area.
18. The orthopaedic implant of claim 12 , further comprising a bioactive agent.
