Abstract

The invention provides a monitoring tag for wearing about the appendage of an individual. It includes a self-contained transmitter module that is located in a housing and transmits radio signals to a base unit, for receipt by the base unit if within a predetermined range. If the individual wearing the monitoring tag moves outside this range then the base unit can trigger an alarm or send a warning signal. The housing has an opening for receiving the end of a flexible elongate strap to secure the tag around the appendage of the individual. The strap is attached to the housing inside the opening using a clip, which has structure for fixedly securing it to the strap and structure for fixedly securing it in the opening. Once the clip is attached to the housing it cannot be removed unless a weakened or frangible region between the securing structures is broken.

Claims (20)

1. A flexible strap for securing a monitoring tag to an item, the strap comprising a thermally inelastic elongated material, selected from the group consisting of thread, yarn, braid and tape, which is mechanically bonded to surrounding material of the strap such that the thermally inelastic elongated material cannot move in any direction relative to the surrounding material of the strap, and wherein such mechanical bond can be a chemical mechanical bond and can be a thermal mechanical bond.

2. The strap of claim 1 , wherein the thermally inelastic elongated material is formed from a hybrid mixture of a thermally inelastic material and a bonding material.

3. The strap of claim 2 , wherein the strap incorporates at least one thread made of the thermally inelastic material treated with the bonding material.

4. The strap of claim 2 , wherein the strap incorporates a twisted yarn made of at least one thread of the thermally inelastic material treated with the bonding material.

5. The strap of claim 2 , wherein the strap incorporates a twisted yarn made of at least one thread of the thermally inelastic material and at least one thread of the bonding material.

6. The strap of claim 5 , wherein the number of threads of the thermally inelastic material and the number of threads of the bonding material are the same.

7. The strap of claim 2 , wherein the strap incorporates a woven braid having warp threads made of the thermally inelastic material treated with the bonding material and weft threads made of the thermally inelastic material treated with the bonding material.

8. The strap of claim 2 , and further comprising a woven braid made using twisted warp yarns made of at least one thread of the thermally inelastic material and at least one thread of the bonding material and twisted weft yarns made of at least one thread of the thermally inelastic material and at least one thread of the bonding material.

9. The strap of claim 8 , wherein the braid has a loose weave with holes provided between the twisted warp yarns and the twisted weft yarns.

10. The strap of claim 2 , and further comprising a woven braid having first twisted warp yarns made of at least one thread of the thermally inelastic material and second twisted warp yarns made of at least one thread of the bonding material and first twisted weft yarns made of at least one thread of the thermally inelastic material and second twisted weft yarns made of at least one thread of the bonding material.

11. The strap of claim 8 , wherein the braid has a loose weave with holes provided between the first and second twisted warp yarns and the first and second twisted weft yarns.

12. The strap of claim 2 , and further comprising a tape made of at least one layer of thermally inelastic material and at least one layer of the bonding material.

13. The strap of claim 2 , and further comprising a tape made of the thermally inelastic material that is coated or impregnated with the bonding material.

14. The strap of claim 2 , wherein the thermally inelastic elongated material is selected from the group consisting of organic polymer, glass fibre, carbon fibre, steel and tungsten.

15. The strap of claim 2 , wherein the bonding material is viscose.

16. The strap of claim 1 , wherein the strap is formed from a thermoplastics material.

17. The strap of claim 1 , wherein the strap is formed from a rubber material.

18. The strap of claim 1 , wherein the strap has two ends and the thermally inelastic elongated material is embedded in the strap such that it extends from one end of the strap to the other.

19. The strap of claim 1 , wherein the strap has two ends and an optical fibre is embedded in the strap such that it extends from one end of the strap to the other.

20. The strap of claim 18 , wherein at least two separate ones of the thermally inelastic elongated material are embedded in the strap, at least one on either side of the optical fibre.
