Abstract

A reduced cost energy transfer element for power converter circuits. In one embodiment, an energy transfer element according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a magnetic element having an external surface with at least a first winding and a second winding wound around the external surface of the magnetic element without a bobbin. As such, energy to be received from a power converter circuit input is to be transferred from the first winding to the second winding through a magnetic coupling provided by the magnetic element to a power converter circuit output.

Claims (12)

1. An energy transfer element, comprising:

a magnetic element including an external surface;

at least a first winding and a second winding wound around the external surface of the magnetic element without a bobbin, the first winding having first and second ends attached to the magnetic element, respectively, the second winding having first and second ends not attached to the magnetic element, wherein energy to be received from a power converter circuit input is to be transferred from the first winding to the second winding through a magnetic coupling provided by the magnetic element to a power converter circuit output; and

at least a partial exterior coating of a material having a magnetic permeability substantially greater than free space.

2. The energy transfer element of claim 1 wherein the exterior coating comprises fine particles of magnetic material.

3. The energy transfer element of claim 2 wherein the fine particles of magnetic material are included in a substantially homogenous mixture with a nonmagnetic liquid.

4. The energy transfer element of claim 1 wherein the exterior coating is solidified by curing the substantially homogenous mixture after application.

5. The energy transfer element of claim 1 wherein the exterior coating is applied by painting.

6. The energy transfer element of claim 1 wherein the exterior coating is applied by dipping.

7. The energy transfer element of claim 1 wherein a thickness of the exterior coating results in a redirection and confinement of magnetic flux in the first and second windings.

8. The energy transfer element of claim 1 wherein a thickness of the exterior coating results in an adjustment of an inductance of the first and second windings.

9. The energy transfer element of claim 1 further comprising first and second conductive pins attached to the magnetic element, wherein the first and second ends of the first winding are coupled to the first and second conductive pins, respectively, and the first and second ends of the second winding are not coupled to the first and second conductive pins.
