Abstract

A bone screw is provided having first and second threaded portions of different diameter separated by a middle portion that is unthreaded so that the bone screw may be inserted into a pair of adjacent bone fragments and used to compress the fragments together by driving the screw into a hole drilled in the fragments. An installation tool is also disclosed for threadably engaging one end of the bone screw and is used to initially drive the screw into the bone hole. Thereafter, a screwdriver may be inserted through the tool and into engagement with a recess in the bone screw and may be used to drive the screw fully into the bone and to separate the bone screw from the installation tool. A method of installation is further provided.

Claims (9)

1. A device for manipulating bone fragments, comprising:

a bone screw having a front end having a first threaded portion, a rear end having a second threaded portion, an unthreaded middle portion, and a longitudinal axis;

an installation instrument having a distal portion with an inner threaded portion configured to threadedly engage the second threaded portion of the bone screw; and

a driving tool substantially coaxial with the distal portion and rigidly attached to a locking collar, the driving tool including an engaging portion at a distal end thereof structured to engage a corresponding receiving portion of the bone screw to rotate the bone screw;

wherein the installation instrument further comprises a locking component movable from a first configuration in which the locking component is non-rotatably engaged with the locking collar to prevent rotation of the driving tool relative to the installation instrument and a second configuration in which the locking component and locking collar are disengaged from one another to permit rotation of the driving tool relative to the installation instrument to disengage the bone screw from the inner threaded portion of the distal portion of the installation instrument.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the locking component is slidably associated with the driving tool.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the installation instrument further comprises a bore.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein locking component has a least one protrusion, and wherein the locking collar has at least one indentation engageable with the least one protrusion.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the locking component is rotationally fixed relative to the distal portion.
