Abstract

A microsurgical laser probe is provided with a distal end portion of an optic fiber that projects from a tubular sleeve of the probe and can be caused to bend relative to the probe sleeve by manual manipulation of a mechanism on a handle of the probe.

Claims (50)

1. An ophthalmic surgery method comprising:

providing an ophthalmic surgery instrument having an instrument handle and a rigid tubular sleeve projecting from the handle, and having an optic fiber extending through the handle and the sleeve where the optic fiber has a proximal end and an opposite distal end portion with a bent configuration positioned in the sleeve and held in a straight configuration by the sleeve;

connecting the optic fiber proximal end to a light source;

inserting the sleeve through an incision in an eye and positioning the sleeve in an interior of the eye;

causing the optic fiber distal end portion to gradually bend from the straight configuration toward the bent configuration in the eye interior to steer and direct the flexible optic fiber to a surgical target site in the eye interior.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

rotating the instrument with the optic fiber distal end portion in the pre-bent configuration in the eye interior to further direct the optic fiber.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting light through the optic fiber for illumination of the eye interior.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

connecting the optic fiber proximal end to a laser light source.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

transmitting laser light through the optic fiber for laser surgery of the eye interior.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

causing the distal end portion of the optic fiber to project from the sleeve and to bend relative to the sleeve by manual manipulation of a mechanism on the instrument handle.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

the surgical target site lying in posterior portions of the eye interior.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

the surgical target site lying in anterior portions of the eye interior.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

causing the distal end portion of the optic fiber positioned in the sleeve to gradually be exposed at a distal end of the sleeve and to gradually bend from the straight configuration of the optic fiber toward the bent configuration of the optic fiber.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

adjusting the bend in the optic fiber distal end portion in a range from 0° to 90° in the eye interior.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

inserting the sleeve through a cannula positioned in the incision in the eye.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retracting the optic fiber into the sleeve causing straightening of the bent configuration of the optic fiber projecting from the sleeve, and with the optic fiber contained in the sleeve, pulling the sleeve back through the incision in the eye.

13. An ophthalmic surgery method comprising:

providing a directional probe with an elongate narrow handle with opposite distal and proximal ends and a hollow bore extending through the handle;

providing a narrow rigid sleeve in the handle bore at the handle distal end with the sleeve projecting from the handle distal end to a distal end of the sleeve;

providing a finger pad on the handle for sliding movement of the finger pad along the handle;

providing a length of optic fiber extending between the handle and a connector with a proximal end of the optic fiber entering the connector and a distal end of the optic fiber extending through the handle bore from the handle proximal end and a distal end portion of the optic fiber that is bent through an angle being contained inside the sleeve where the sleeve holds the optic fiber distal end portion in a straight configuration of the sleeve;

inserting the sleeve through an incision in an eye and positioning the sleeve in the eye interior;

causing the distal end portion of the optic fiber contained inside the sleeve to be gradually exposed at the sleeve distal end in the eye interior and gradually bend from the straight configuration of the sleeve toward the bent angle and thereby adjustably positioning the optic fiber through a plurality of angles in the eye interior.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

adjustably positioning the optic fiber through a range of angles from 0° to 90° in the eye interior.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

connecting the connector to a light source; and,

transmitting light through the optic fiber providing illumination to the eye interior.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

connecting the connector to a laser light source; and,

transmitting laser light through the optic fiber for laser surgery in the eye interior.

17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

adjustably positioning the optic fiber through a plurality of angles to direct the optic fiber to a surgical site in a posterior portion of the eye interior.

18. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

adjustably positioning the optic fiber through a plurality of angles to direct the optic fiber to a surgical site in an anterior portion of the eye interior.

19. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

inserting the sleeve through a cannula positioned in the incision in the eye.

20. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

retracting the optic fiber into the sleeve causing straightening of the bent distal end portion of the optic fiber projecting from the sleeve, and with the optic fiber contained in the sleeve, pulling the sleeve back through the surgical entry site.
