Abstract

A printer module for use with like printer modules to form an array of printer modules includes a housing that defines a print media inlet and a print media outlet. A chassis is positioned in the housing. A print engine is mounted on the chassis to carry out a printing operation on the print media. A feed assembly is mounted on the chassis to feed the print media through the print engine. A first locator is positioned on a first side of the housing. A second locator is positioned on a second side of the housing. The locators are configured so that the first locator is engageable with the second locator of an adjacent printer module.

Claims (13)

1. A printer stack comprising a plurality of printer modules stacked in an offset arrangement, each printer module comprising:

a housing that defines a print media inlet and a print media outlet;

a chassis positioned in the housing;

a print engine mounted on the chassis to carry out a printing operation on the print media;

a feed assembly mounted on the chassis to feed the print media through the print engine;

a plurality of first locators positioned on a first side of the housing; and

a second locator positioned on a second side of the housing, the printer modules being stacked so that least one of said first locators is engaged with the second locator of an adjacent printer moduler, wherein said first locator are offer from said second locator.

2. A printer stack as claimed in claim 1 , in which the housing of each printer modules includes an operatively upper cover, an operatively lower cover and a pair of opposed side walls, the first locator being in the form of a number of holes defined in the upper cover and the second locator being in the form of a number of feet.

3. A printer stack as claimed in claim 1 , in which the print engine of each printer module includes a pair of opposed pagewidth printhead assemblies, each including printhead chips, the printhead assemblies being positioned so that the printhead chips can carry out a double sided printing operation on a sheet of print media passing between the printhead chips.

4. A printer stack as claimed in claim 3 , in which each printhead assembly includes a leading printhead and a trailing printhead, respective leading and trailing printheads being aligned.

5. A printer stack as claimed in claim 4 , in which the feed assembly includes a drive roller mounted on the chassis and a driven roller also mounted on the chassis, the rollers being engaged with each other to grip and feed the print media between the printhead assemblies.

6. A printer stack as claimed in claim 5 , in which the printheads are shaped to accommodate the rollers and to minimize a distance between a point of contact between the rollers and the print media and the printhead chips.

7. A printer stack as claimed in claim 6 , in which the printheads have complementary arcuate profiles to permit at least the leading printheads to extend between respective portions of the rollers.
