Abstract

Aspects of a method and system for transporting configuration messages across a DS in a WLAN are presented. Aspects of a method for enabling communication of information in a secure communication system may comprise configuring a wireless client station located in a client network based on configuration information received from a configurator. The configurator is located in a configurator network that is located external to and communicatively coupled to the client network. Aspects of a system for enabling communication of information in a secure communication system may comprise a configurator located in a configurator network that is located external to and communicatively coupled to a client network. The configurator configures a wireless client station located in the client network based on configuration information transmitted by the configurator to the wireless client station.

Claims (33)

1. A method for enabling communication of information in a secure communication system, the method comprising:

configuring a client station located in a client network based on encapsulated configuration information received from a configurator located in a configurator network that is located external to and communicatively coupled to said client network, wherein said encapsulated configuration information indicates whether at least one other client station has been configured within a configurator timing window.

2. The method according to claim 1 , comprising receiving authentication response information from said client station located in said client network.

3. The method according to claim 1 , comprising communicating authentication enablement information to said client station located in said client network that is communicatively coupled to said configurator network.

4. The method according to claim 1 , comprising receiving an association request message from said client station.

5. The method according to claim 4 , comprising communicating an association response message to said client station in response to said received association request message.

6. The method according to claim 1 , comprising activating a button located at an access point prior to said configuring of said client station.

7. The method according to claim 6 , comprising indicating opening of said configurator timing window for said configuring of said client station based on said activating of said button.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said encapsulated configuration information comprises one or more of a service set identifier, a basic service set identifier, a passphrase, a configurator address, a proxy enable flag, and/or an open window button location flag.

9. The method according to claim 1 , comprising communicating information to and from said configurator utilizing one or both of a distribution system network and/or an access point in said configurator network.

10. The method according to claim 1 , comprising communicating accessibility information regarding said client station to one or more other configurators located in said configurator network.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon, a computer program having at least one code section for enabling communication of information in a secure communication system, the at least one code section being executable by a computer for causing the computer to perform steps comprising:

configuring a client station located in a client network based on encapsulated configuration information received from a configurator located in a configurator network that is located external to and communicatively coupled to said client network, wherein said encapsulated configuration information indicates whether at least one other client station has been configured within a configurator timing window.

12. A computer-readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein said at least one code section comprises code for receiving authentication response information from said client station located in said client network.

13. A computer-readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein said at least one code section comprises code for communicating authentication enablement information to said client station located in said client network that is communicatively coupled to said configurator network.

14. A computer-readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein said at least one code section comprises code for receiving an association request message from said client station.

15. A computer-readable medium according to claim 14 , wherein said at least one code section comprises code for communicating an association response message to said client station in response to said received association request message.

16. A computer-readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein said at least one code section comprises code for activating a button located at an access point prior to said configuring of said client station.

17. A computer-readable medium according to claim 16 , wherein said at least one code section comprises code for indicating opening of said configurator timing window for said configuring of said client station based on said activating of said button.

18. A computer-readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein said encapsulated configuration information comprises one or more of a service set identifier, a basic service set identifier, a passphrase, a configurator address, a proxy enable flag, and/or an open window button location flag.

19. A computer-readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein said at least one code section comprises code for communicating information to and from said configurator utilizing one or both of a distribution system network and/or an access point in said configurator network.

20. A computer-readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein said at least one code section comprises code for communicating accessibility information regarding said client station to one or more other configurators located in said configurator network.

21. A system for enabling communication of information in a secure communication system, the system comprising:

one or more circuits for use in a configurator located in a configurator network that is located external to and communicatively coupled to a client network, said one or more circuits in said configurator are operable to configure a client station located in said client network based on encapsulated configuration information communicated by said configurator to said client station, wherein said encapsulated configuration information indicates whether at least one other client station has been configured within a configurator timing window.

22. The system according to claim 21 , wherein said one or more circuits in said configurator are operable to receive authentication response information from said client station located in said client network.

23. The system according to claim 21 , wherein said one or more circuits in said configurator are operable to communicate authentication enablement information to said client station located in said client network that is communicatively coupled to said configurator network.

24. The system according to claim 21 , wherein said one or more circuits in said configurator are operable to receive an association request message from said client station.

25. The system according to claim 24 , wherein said one or more circuits in said configurator are operable to communicate an association response message to said client station in response to said received association request message.

26. The system according to claim 21 , wherein said one or more circuits in said configurator are operable to activate a button located at an access point prior to said configuring of said client station.

27. The system according to claim 26 , wherein said one or more circuits in said configurator are operable to indicate opening of said configurator timing window for said configuring of said client station based on said activating of said button.

28. The system according to claim 21 , wherein said encapsulated configuration information comprises one or more of a service set identifier, a basic service set identifier, a passphrase, a configurator address, a proxy enable flag, and/or an open window button location flag.

29. The system according to claim 21 , wherein said one or more circuits in said configurator are operable to communicate information to and from said configurator utilizing one or both of a distribution system network and/or an access point in said configurator network.

30. The system according to claim 21 , wherein said one or more circuits in said configurator are operable to communicate accessibility information regarding said client station to one or more other configurators located in said configurator network.
