Abstract

Hydroxycitric acid compositions which comprise approximately 14 to 26% by weight of calcium, and approximately 24 to 40% by weight of potassium or approximately 14 to 24% by weight of sodium, or a mixture thereof, each calculated as a percentage of the total hydroxycitric acid content of the composition, together with dietary supplements and food products containing such compositions and methods for utilizing such compositions, dietary supplements and food products to reduce body weight in mammals are disclosed.

Claims (73)

1. A dietary supplement composition for reducing body weight comprising:

a double salt of hydroxycitric acid wherein the cations comprise calcium and potassium.

2. The dietary supplement composition as recited in claim 1 , wherein the composition as a percentage of the total weight of said hydroxycitric acid composition comprises:

a) calcium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 14%; and

an upper limit of approximately 26%; and

b) potassium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 24%; and

an upper limit of approximately 40%.

3. The dietary supplement composition as recited in claim 1 , comprising at least approximately 50% by weight of total hydroxycitric acid, wherein the composition as a percentage of the total weight of said hydroxycitric acid composition comprises:

a) calcium by weight between:

approximately 5%; to

approximately 13%; and

b) potassium by weight between:

approximately 9%; to

approximately 20%.

4. The dietary supplement as recited in claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises excipients.

5. The dietary supplement as recited in claim 1 , wherein the composition as a percentage of the total weight of said hydroxycitric acid composition comprises:

a) calcium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 14%; and

an upper limit of approximately 26%; and

b) potassium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 24%; and

an upper limit of approximately 40%.

The dietary supplement as recited in claim 1 , comprising at least approximately 40% by weight of total hydroxycitric acid, wherein the composition as a percentage of the total weight of said hydroxycitric acid composition comprises: a) calcium by weight between: a lower limit of approximately 5%; to an upper limit of approximately 13%; and b) potassium by weight between: a lower limit of approximately 9%; to an upper limit of approximately 20%.

7. The dietary supplement as recited in claim 1 , wherein sodium comprises less than approximately 2% by weight.

8. The dietary supplement as recited in claim 1 , wherein sodium comprises less than approximately 1% by weight.

9. The dietary supplement composition as recited in claim 1 , wherein the lactone form of hydroxycitric acid comprises less than approximately 4% by weight of the total weight of the composition.

10. The dietary supplement composition as recited in claim 1 : wherein the hydroxycitric acid comprises between: a lower limit of approximately 40% by weight; and an upper limit of approximately 65% by weight.

11. A food product for use in reducing body weight wherein the food product composition comprises:

a double salt of hydroxycitric acid wherein the cations comprise calcium and potassium.

12. The food product as recited in claim 11 , wherein the composition as a percentage of the total weight of said hydroxycitric acid composition comprises:

a) calcium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 14%; and

an upper limit of approximately 26%; and

b) potassium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 24%; and

an upper limit of approximately 40%.

13. The food product as recited in claim 11 , comprising at least approximately 40% by weight of total hydroxycitric acid, wherein the composition as a percentage of the total weight of said hydroxycitric acid composition comprises:

a) calcium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 5%; to

an upper limit of approximately 13%; and

b) potassium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 9%; to

an upper limit of approximately 20%.

14. The food product as recited in claim 11 , where sodium comprises less than approximately 2% by weight.

15. The food product as recited in claim 11 , wherein the lactone form of hydroxycitric acid comprises less than approximately 4% by weight of the total hydroxycitric acid content of the composition.

16. The food product as recited in claim 11 , wherein said hydroxycitric acid composition comprises of the total weight of said prepared food product between:

a lower limit of approximately 0.001% by weight; and

an upper limit of approximately 25% by weight.

17. The food product as recited in claim 11 , wherein the hydroxycitric acid composition comprises between:

a lower limit of approximately 40% by weight; and

an upper limit of approximately 65% by weight.

18. The food product as recited in claim 11 , where sodium comprises less than approximately 1% by weight.

19. A method for reducing body weight, which comprises administering to a mammal in need of such treatment a composition comprising:

an effective amount of a double salt of hydroxycitric acid wherein the cations comprise calcium and potassium.

20. The method for reducing body weight as recited in claim 19 , wherein the composition is administered daily to said mammal in the range between:

a lower limit of approximately 1 milligrams per kilogram of body weight; and

an upper limit of approximately 50 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

21. The method for reducing body weight as recited in claim 19 , wherein the composition as a percentage of the total weight of said hydroxycitric acid composition comprises:

a) calcium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 14%; and

an upper limit of approximately 26%; and

b) potassium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 24%; and

an upper limit of approximately 40%.

22. The method for reducing body weight as recited in claim 19 , wherein the composition comprises at least approximately 40% by weight of total hydroxycitric acid, wherein the composition as a percentage of the total weight of said hydroxycitric acid composition comprises:

a) calcium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 5%; to

an upper limit of approximately 13%; and

b) potassium by weight between:

a lower limit of approximately 9%; to

an upper limit of approximately 20%.
