Abstract

The present invention relates to cables made of twisted conductor pairs. More specifically, the present invention relates to twisted pair communication cables for high-speed data communications applications. A twisted pair including at least two conductors extends along a generally longitudinal axis, with an insulation surrounding each of the conductors. The conductors are twisted generally longitudinally along the axis. A cable includes at least two twisted pairs and a filler. At least two of the cables are positioned along generally parallel axes for at least a predefined distance. The cables are configured to efficiently and accurately propagate high-speed data signals by, among other functions, limiting at least a subset of the following: impedance deviations, signal attenuation, and alien crosstalk along the predefined distance.

43 . A twisted pair having a length, the twisted pair comprising:

a) a first insulated conductor and a second insulated conductor, the first and second insulated conductors being twisted about one another;

b) wherein the first and second insulated conductors are twisted at first twist rate at one point along the length of the twisted pair and at a second twist rate at another point along the length of the twisted pair, the first twist rate being different than the second twist rate.

44 . The twisted pair of claim 43 , wherein twisted pair has a twist rate that varies along the entire length of the twisted pair.

45 . The twisted pair of claim 44 , wherein the twist rate continuously increases along the length of the twisted pair.

46 . The twisted pair of claim 44 , wherein the twist rate continuously decreases along the length of the twisted pair.

47 . A cable, comprising:

a) at least one twisted pair having a length, the one twisted pair having a lay length that varies along the length of the one twisted pair; and

b) a jacket surrounding the one twisted pair.

48 . The cable of claim 47 , wherein the lay length continuously increases along the length of the one twisted pair.

49 . The cable of claim 47 , wherein the lay length continuously decreases along the length of the one twisted pair.

50 . The cable of claim 47 , wherein the cable includes at least first and second twisted pairs, each of the first and second twisted pairs having a lay length that varies along a length of the twisted pairs.

51 . The cable of claim 50 , wherein the lay lengths of the first and second twisted pairs are different from one another at points of adjacency of the twisted pairs.

52 . The cable of claim 50 , wherein the lay length of the first twisted pair is defined by a twisting in a first direction, and the lay length of the second twisted pair is defined by a twisting in a second direction, the first direction being that same as the second direction.

53 . The cable of claim 52 , wherein both the lay lengths of the first and second twisted pairs is defined by a twisting in a right-hand twist direction.

54 . A cable having a length, comprising:

a) a plurality of twisted pairs; and

b) a jacket surrounding the plurality of twisted pairs;

c) wherein the cable is helically twisted at first twist rate at one point along the length of the cable and at a second twist rate at another point along the length of the cable, the first twist rate being different than the second twist rate.

55 . The cable of claim 54 , wherein cable has a twist rate that varies along the entire length of the cable.

56 . The cable of claim 55 , wherein the twist rate continuously increases along the length of the cable.

57 . The cable of claim 55 , wherein the twist rate continuously decreases along the length of the cable.

58 . The cable of claim 54 , wherein the twist rate of the cable is defined by a randomized helical twisting.

59 . A cable bundle, comprising:

a) a first cable having a first cable lay length, the first cable including a plurality of twisted pairs surrounded by a jacket; and

b) a second cable having a second cable lay length, the second cable including a plurality of twisted pairs surrounded by a jacket;

c) wherein the first cable lay length of the first cable is different than the second cable lay length of the second cable.

60 . The cable bundle of claim 59 , wherein the first and second cable lay lengths are defined by randomized helical twisting.

61 . The cable bundle of claim 59 , wherein each of the cable lay lengths of the first and second cables varies along a length of the cables.

62 . The cable bundle of claim 61 , wherein each of the cable lay lengths of the first and second cables has one of a continuously increasing cable lay length and a continuously decreasing cable lay length.

63 . The cable bundle of claim 61 , wherein the lay lengths of the first and second cables are different from one another at points of adjacency of the cables.

64 . The cable bundle of claim 59 , wherein each of the first and second cables includes a first twisted pair and a second twisted pair, each of the first twisted pair of the cables having a twisted pair lay length that is different than a twisted pair lay length of the second twisted pair.

65 . The cable bundle of claim 64 , wherein each of the twisted pair lay lengths of the first and second twisted pairs varies along a length of the twisted pairs.

66 . The cable bundle of claim 65 , wherein each of the twisted pair lay lengths of the first and second twisted pairs has one of a continuously increasing twisted pair lay length and a continuously decreasing twisted pair lay length.
