Abstract

Techniques for watermarking and distributing are provided. Content is broken into frames, each frame includes a watermark. Resources request the content and each frame of each resource's acquired version of the content includes a watermark. The frames of each resource's acquired version of the content form unique watermark sequences or unique keys. Each watermark sequence or key is uniquely associated with a particular resource. Each resource is also provided one or more delivery plans for acquiring that resource's uniquely watermark and sequenced version of the content over the network.

Claims (34)

1. A computer-implemented system, comprising:

a content delivery service implemented in a computer-readable medium and to execute on a computer; and

a watermarking service implemented in a computer-readable medium and to execute on a computer;

wherein the watermarking service is to generate a unique watermark sequence for a resource, the unique watermark sequence is associated with frames of content desired by the resource, and wherein the content delivery service is to develop and to provide a delivery plan and to provide the unique watermark sequence to the resource over a network, wherein the watermarking service is to maintain an alphabet of watermarks, wherein each element of the alphabet is associated with a unique frame of the content, and wherein the alphabet and a predefined length for the unique watermark sequence is to be acquired before a request is received for the content, and each frame of the content is to be replicated and each replicated frame is to be associated with an element selected from the alphabet before the request is received.

2. The system of claim 1 further comprising, a monitoring service implemented in a computer-readable medium and to execute on a computer, wherein the monitoring service is to monitor the network for versions of the content having the unique watermark sequence.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the monitor service is to further monitor the network for versions of the content that do not include the unique watermark sequence.

4. The system of claim 2 further comprising, a reporting service implemented in a computer-readable medium and to execute on a computer, wherein the reporting service is to report a number of the versions that are not registered.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the delivery plan includes a number of frames associated with the content that are to be acquired from different network resources in a peer-to-peer fashion.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the content delivery service is to further develop one or more alternative delivery plans for the content and to provide the one or more alternative plans to the resource.

7. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving a request from a first resource for content;

generating a unique watermark sequence associated with the first resource;

developing a delivery plan for the first resource to acquire the content;

communicating the unique watermark sequence and the delivery plan to the first resource over a network;

providing each frame of the content to the first resource over the network, wherein the unique watermark sequence repeats for two or more iterations within the content, and wherein each frame includes a watermark associated with the unique watermark sequence;

acquiring a set of symbols and a predefined length for the unique watermark sequences before the request is received; and

replicating each frame of the content and associating each replicated frame with a symbol selected from the set of symbols before the request is received.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising, providing discontinuous frames of the content to the resource according to the delivery plan, wherein each discontinuous frame is associated with a watermark included within the unique watermark sequence.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising, instructing the first resource, via the delivery plan, to acquire remaining frames of the content from one or more second resources over the network in a peer-to-peer fashion, wherein each of the one or more second resources provide different frames of the content that have a different watermark associated with the unique watermark sequence.

10. The method of claim 7 further comprising, developing one or more alternative delivery plans and communicating the one or more alternative delivery plans to the first resource over the network.

11. The method of claim 7 further comprising, processing the method one or more additional iterations for one or more second resources, wherein for each iteration each second resource receives a new unique watermark sequence and a new delivery plan.

12. The method of claim 7 further comprising, monitoring versions of the content over the network for the unique watermark sequence.

13. A computer-readable storage encoded with instructions thereon, the instructions capable of being executed by a computer to perform the method of:

breaking content into a plurality of frames;

acquiring a set of symbols for watermarks;

defining a length for watermark sequences;

replicating the plurality of frames, wherein each unique frame is replicated at least once for each symbol of the set of symbols;

assigning a unique watermark sequence having the length to each requesting resource;

adding a control symbol to the set of symbols to be associated with a suspect requesting resource to monitor versions of the content over a network having the control symbol;

acquiring the set of symbols and the predefined length for the unique watermark sequences before a request is received for the content; and

replicating each frame of the content and associating each replicated frame with a symbol selected from the set of symbols before the request is received.

14. The machine accessible medium of claim 13 further comprising instructions for developing a delivery plan for the content for each of the requesting resources to acquire the content from one or more other resources via peer-to-peer networks, wherein each acquired content includes each of the requesting resources unique watermark sequence.

15. The machine accessible medium of claim 14 further comprising instructions for providing at least some frames of the content directly to one or more of the requesting resources.

16. The machine accessible medium of claim 13 further comprising instructions for recording and monitoring each request resource's unique watermark sequence and versions of the content appearing over the network.
