Abstract

A liquid crystal display device which includes a first substrate, a second substrate, a liquid crystal composition sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate, and a plurality of pixels disposed on the first substrate. Each of the plurality of pixels is supplied with a video signal via a switching element. Each of the plurality of pixels is provided with a capacitance having two electrodes in which one is connected to a first electrode of a corresponding one of the plurality of pixels and another is supplied with a pixel-potential control signal by a pixel-potential control circuit. The pixel-potential control circuit enables selection of a first voltage level and a second voltage level.

Claims (28)

1. A liquid crystal display device comprising:

a first substrate;

a second substrate;

a liquid crystal composition sandwiched between said first substrate and said second substrate;

a plurality of pixels disposed on said first substrate;

each of said plurality of pixels being supplied with a video signal via a switching element connected to a first electrode thereof;

each of said plurality of pixels being provided with a capacitance;

one of two capacitance-forming electrodes forming said capacitance being connected to said first electrode of a corresponding one of said plurality of pixels;

another of said two capacitance-forming electrodes being supplied with a pixel-potential control signal by a pixel-potential control circuit; and

light-blocking films overlapping gaps between electrodes forming said plurality of pixels on said first substrate;

wherein a polarity of said video signal reverses with respect to a first reference voltage with a repetition period;

wherein said pixel-potential control signal alternates between two voltage levels of the same polarity with respect to a second reference voltage so that a voltage on said first electrode of the corresponding one of said plurality of pixels is reversed in polarity with respect to said first reference voltage;

wherein said pixel-potential control signal is provided via a corresponding one of said light-blocking films; and

wherein said light-blocking films are formed above said pixel-potential circuit.

2. A liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein said first substrate is comprised of silicon.

3. A liquid crystal display device comprising:

a first substrate;

a second substrate;

a liquid crystal composition sandwiched between said first substrate and said second substrate; and

a plurality of pixels disposed on said first substrate;

each of said plurality of pixels being supplied with a video signal via a switching element connected to a first electrode thereof;

each of said plurality of pixels being provided with a capacitance;

one of two capacitance-forming electrodes forming said capacitance being connected to said first electrode of a corresponding one of said plurality of pixels; and

another of said two capacitance-forming electrodes being supplied with a pixel-potential control signal by a pixel-potential control circuit;

wherein a polarity of said video signal reverses with respect to a first reference voltage with a repetition period;

wherein said pixel-potential control signal alternates between a first voltage level and a second voltage level so that a voltage on said first electrode of the corresponding one of said plurality of pixels changes into a reverse polarity with respect to said first reference voltage; and

wherein said pixel-potential control circuit enables selections of said first voltage level and said second voltage level.

4. A liquid crystal display device according to claim 3 , wherein said first substrate is comprised of silicon.
