Abstract

A mobile services control platform supports an enhanced service, Voice Forwarding to Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Voice. Functionally, the service allows a subscriber to use a Wi-Fi device to receive voice calls directed to his or her mobile number. In a representative example, when the user connects over a Wi-Fi network, e.g., using his or her laptop or other such device, he or she selects “Wi-Fi Voice” option from a client. As a result, future voice calls directed to the user's mobile number get routed to his or her laptop over Wi-Fi, without the caller being aware that the user has connected over a different network. Similarly, voice calls made by the user from his or her laptop Wi-Fi (e.g., through a softphone) are delivered to the recipient's device as if they originated from the mobile phone number.

Claims (50)

1. A method of communicating voice within a converged networking operating environment wherein a gateway is deployed in a service provider's telecommunications network and client software is embedded in a target device that is operable within both the telecommunications network and a second network to which the target device is connectable, the service provider's telecommunications network having a set of one or more network elements that comprise or are associated with a voice over IP infrastructure, and a home location register (HLR) to which a subscriber's identity is assigned, and wherein a connection is established between the client software and the gateway, the subscriber having a mobile telephone number, the method comprising:

detecting presence of the target device in the second network;

upon detecting presence of the target device, updating given information in the HLR to identify the gateway as a location of the target device when the target device is connected to the second network, wherein after updating the given information in the HLR the gateway acts as a visitor location register (VLR);

routing voice calls received to the mobile telephone number over the voice over IP infrastructure to the target device without using a number or identity associated with the second network; and

routing voice calls initiated by the target device over the voice over IP infrastructure, wherein the initiated voice calls appear as if originating from the mobile telephone number instead of a number or identity associated with the second network.

2. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the target device is mobile Wi-Fi device and the second network is a wireless local area network.

3. The method as described in claim 2 further including the step of authenticating the mobile Wi-Fi device in the wireless local area network prior to the detecting step.

4. The method as described in claim 2 further including the step of receiving at the gateway an indication that a user of the mobile Wi-Fi device desires to receive voice calls at the mobile Wi-Fi device.

5. The method as described in claim 2 wherein the step of communicating voice to the mobile Wi-Fi device comprises:

receiving an incoming voice call at a first network element of the voice infrastructure;

having the first network element query the HLR to identify the location of the mobile Wi-Fi device;

having the gateway set up the incoming voice call;

transferring data packets between a second network element and the mobile Wi-Fi device.

6. The method as described in claim 5 wherein the first network element is a GMSC and the second network element is a MGW.

7. The method of claim 2 wherein a given voice call is a call that is received by the mobile Wi-Fi device when the mobile Wi-Fi device is in the service provider's telecommunications network, further including the steps of:

authenticating the mobile Wi-Fi device in the wireless local area network;

following authentication, initiating a conference call to add the subscriber, now operating in the wireless local area network, to the call; and

when the conference call is established, disconnecting a call leg to the service provider's telecommunications network.

8. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the mobile Wi-Fi device is a laptop having a Wi-Fi interface card.

9. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the subscriber's identity is a MSISDN.

10. The method as described in claim 1 further including the step of disconnecting the target device from the voice over IP infrastructure.

11. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the target device is a wireless client having a first interface to the second network and a second interface to the telecommunications network.

12. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the service provider's telecommunications network is GSM-based.

13. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the service provider's telecommunications network is CDMA-based.

14. A method of communicating voice within a converged networking operating environment wherein a gateway is deployed in a service provider's telecommunications network and client software is embedded in a mobile subscriber's Wi-Fi device that is operable within both the telecommunications network and a wireless local area network to which the mobile Wi-Fi device is connectable, the service provider's telecommunications network having a set of one or more network elements that comprise or are associated with a voice over IP infrastructure and a home location register (HLR) to which a mobile subscriber's identity is assigned, the mobile subscriber having an associated telephone number, comprising:

upon detecting presence of the mobile Wi-Fi device in the wireless local area network, updating given information in the HLR to identify the gateway as a location of the mobile Wi-Fi device when the mobile Wi-Fi device is connected to the wireless local area network, wherein after updating the given information in the HLR the gateway acts as a visitor location register (VLR);

routing voice calls received to the mobile telephone number over the voice over IP infrastructure to the mobile Wi-Fi device without using a number or identity associated with the wireless local area network; and

routing voice calls initiated by the mobile Wi-Fi device over the voice over IP infrastructure, wherein the initiated voice calls appear as if originating from the telephone number instead of a number or identity associated with the wireless local area network.

15. The method as described in claim 14 wherein the service provider's telecommunications network is GSM-based.

16. The method as described in claim 14 wherein the service provider's telecommunications network is CDMA-based.

17. The method as described in claim 14 wherein the mobile Wi-Fi device is a laptop having a sofiphone.

18. The method as described in claim 14 wherein presence of the mobile Wi-Fi device in the wireless local area network is detected following a handoff from the service provider's telecommunications network.

19. The method as described in claim 18 wherein, following handoff, the mobile Wi-Fi device is disconnected from the service provider's telecommunications network.

20. Apparatus for use in a service provider's telecommunications network having a set of one or more network elements that route data messages and a database to which a subscriber's identity is assigned, wherein a voice over IP infrastructure is associated with or part of the service provider's telecommunications network, comprising:

at least one processor;

a first set of instructions executable on the processor and responsive to a service request from a mobile Wi-Fi device located in a wireless local area network (WLAN) for initiating a request to update data message routing information in the database, wherein the updated data message routing information identifies the apparatus as a location of the mobile Wi-Fi device in the service provider's telecommunications network when the mobile Wi-Fi device is connected to the WLAN; and

a second set of instructions executable on the processor for establishing a call the voice over IP infrastructure and the mobile Wi-Fi device to enable the mobile Wi-Fi device, while located in the WLAN, to receive a voice call directed to a mobile subscriber telephone number or to originate a voice call from the mobile subscriber telephone number, in either case without requiring the mobile Wi-Fi device to have an identity in the WLAN that is distinct from the mobile subscriber telephone number.

21. A method of communicating voice within a converged networking operating environment wherein a gateway is deployed in a first network and client software is embedded in a device that is operable within both the first network and a second network to which the device is connectable, wherein a user has a given identity in the first network, wherein a voice over IP infrastructure is associated with or part of the first network, comprising:
