Abstract

Embodiments of the invention relate to a system and method for providing speech-enabled application programs. The speech-enabled programs automatically execute requests input by users. One or more natural language variants may be mapped with at least one natural language exemplar. The natural language exemplar may correspond to a typical way to express a request relevant to the speech-enabled application program. The natural language variant may correspond to an alternative way of expressing the same request. A recognized input string is received and a prospective variant that most resembles the received recognized input string is selected from the natural language variants. The natural language exemplar mapped to the prospective variant is identified. An action instruction associated with the identified natural language exemplar is executed to fulfill the user's request.

Claims (27)

1. In a speech-enabled service, a method for creating customized files containing personalized command variants relating to the speech-enabled service, the method comprising:

accessing a context file relating to the speech-enabled service, the context file containing a natural language exemplar associated with a desired action and a variant associated with the natural language exemplar initialized by a developer of the context file;

creating a customized variant for the desired action, wherein the customized variant is customized by a user and personal to the user;

correlating the customized variant with the natural language exemplar; and

storing the customized variant in a customized context file that is stored in a variant database in a communications network, wherein the variant database stores a plurality of customized context files for each one of a plurality of users, wherein the customized context file is used when the user uses the speech-enabled service.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the customized variant represents one preferred way of the user of expressing the desired action.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein during service access by the user the customized context file is uploaded by the speech-enabled service allowing the user to express the desired action using the customized variant.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the context file is accessed using a web browser.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the context file is accessed using a telephone.

6. A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored thereon instructions that, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to perform a method for creating customized files containing personalized command variants relating to a speech-enabled service, comprising:

accessing a context file relating to the speech-enabled service, the context file containing a natural language exemplar associated with a desired action and a variant associated with the natural language exemplar initialized by a developer of the context file;

creating a customized variant for the desired action, wherein the customized variant is customized by a user and personal to the user;

correlating the customized variant with the natural language exemplar; and

storing the customized variant in a customized context file that is stored in a variant database in a communications network, wherein the variant database stores a plurality of customized context files for each one of a plurality of users, wherein the customized context file is used when the user uses the speech-enabled service.

7. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the customized variant represents one preferred way of the user of expressing the desired action.

8. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 7 , wherein during service access by the user the customized context file is uploaded by the speech-enabled service allowing the user to express the desired action using the customized variant.

9. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the context file is accessed using a web browser.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the context file is accessed using a telephone.

11. An apparatus for creating customized files containing personalized command variants relating to a speech-enabled service, comprising:

means for accessing a context file relating to the speech-enabled service, the context file containing a natural language exemplar associated with a desired action and a variant associated with the natural language exemplar initialized by a developer of the context file;

means for creating a customized variant for the desired action, wherein the customized variant is customized by a user and personal to the user;

means for correlating the customized variant with the natural language exemplar; and

means for storing the customized variant in a customized context file that is stored in a variant database in a communications network, wherein the variant database stores a plurality of customized context files for each one of a plurality of users, wherein the customized context file is used when the user uses the speech-enabled service.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the customized variant represents one preferred way of the user of expressing the desired action.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein during service access by the user the customized context file is uploaded by the speech-enabled service allowing the user to express the desired action using the customized variant.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the context file is accessed using a web browser.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the context file is accessed using a Telephone.
