Abstract

An optical transceiver (or optical transmitter or optical receiver) that is coupled to a host computing system. The optical transceiver includes a system memory and at least one processor. The optical transceiver operates at least in part by the processor executing microcode from system memory. In order to change operation, the optical transceiver pages microcode segments from the host computing system to the system memory of the optical transceiver to adjust for changing operational circumstances. For example, by this paging, microcode segments that are more likely to be used given the current operational circumstances are loaded into the system memory of the optical transceiver, while microcode segments that are less likely to be used given the current operational circumstances are retained at the host computing system.

Claims (24)

1. In an optical transceiver that is communicatively coupled to a host computing system, the optical transceiver including a system memory and at least one processor, a method for paging microcode segments from the host computing system to system memory of the optical transceiver, the method comprising the following:

an act of the optical transceiver requesting a first microcode segment from the host computing system in response to changing operational circumstances of the optical transceiver including at least one of a life cycle change in the optical transceiver, a temperature change in the optical transceiver, and a transition from completion of a process executed using a second microcode segment in the system memory to a process requiring the requested first microcode segment;

an act of the optical transceiver receiving the requested first microcode segment from the host computing system;

an act of the at least one processor executing the first microcode segment from the system memory, wherein the first microcode segment is structured such that, when executed by the at least one processor, the optical transceiver is adaptive towards the changing operational circumstances; and

an act of returning the first microcode segment to the host computing system if the first microcode segment is less likely to be used relative to other microcode segments given the changing operational circumstances.

2. A method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the first microcode segment is structured such that, when executed by the at least one processor, the optical transceiver performs initialization functions.

3. A method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the first microcode segment is structured such that, when executed by the at least one processor, the optical transceiver performs diagnostics.

4. A method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the first microcode segment is structured such that, when executed by the at least one processor, the optical transceiver performs normal operation functions.

5. A method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the first microcode segment is structured such that, when executed by the at least one processor, the optical transceiver performs end-of-life operation functions.

6. A method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein first the microcode segment is structured such that, when executed by the at least one processor, the optical transceiver performs an operation appropriate for a certain temperature range.

7. A method in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising the following: an act of the optical transceiver returning one or more microcode segments to the host computing system prior to the act of the optical transceiver receiving the requested first microcode segment from the host computing system.

8. A method in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising the following:

an act of the optical transceiver requesting a new microcode segment from the host computing system;

an act of the optical transceiver receiving the new requested microcode segment from the host computing system; and

an act of the at least one processor of the optical transceiver executing the new microcode segment from the system memory.

9. A method in accordance with claim 8 , wherein the act of the optical transceiver receiving the new requested microcode segment occurs after the act of the at least one processor of the optical transceiver executing the first microcode segment.

10. A method in accordance with claim 8 , wherein the act of the optical transceiver receiving the new requested microcode segment occurs after the act of the optical transceiver receiving the first microcode segment, but before completing the act of the at least one processor of the optical transceiver executing the first microcode segment.

11. A method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein microcode segments are requested based on an associated likelihood of use given the changing operational circumstances and wherein microcode segments that are less likely to be used relative to other microcode segments given the changing operational circumstances are retained at the host computing system.

12. A method in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising:

an act of maintaining the system memory such that sufficient memory resources are freed up to receive the requested first microcode segment.

13. A method in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising:

repeating the acts of requesting and receiving a new microcode segment while the act of executing the previously received first microcode segment is performed.

14. A method in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising:

deallocating a portion of the system memory in which the second microcode segment is stored upon completion of the process executed using the second microcode segment.
