Abstract

A solar-powered wind chime has a solar energy system for powering an electrical subsystem. The electrical subsystem may include lighting elements for illuminating the wind chime and the area around the wind chime in a decorative and functional manner.

Claims (37)

1. A solar powered wind chime, comprising:

a wind chime structure comprising:

a body,

at least one chime suspended from the body; and

a striker suspended from the body;

an electrical subsystem operably associated with the wind chime structure, the electrical subsystem comprising at least one lighting element attached to the striker such that light radiating from the lighting element can illuminate the at least one chime in a front-lit fashion; and

a solar energy system conductively coupled to the electrical subsystem, the solar energy system comprising:

a rechargeable electrical power source; and

a solar energy collection system conductively coupled to the rechargeable electrical power source for recharging the rechargeable electrical power source,

wherein the at least one lighting element is conductively coupled to the solar energy system.

2. The solar powered wind chime according to claim 1 , wherein the electrical subsystem is a lighting system.

3. The solar powered wind chime according to claim 2 , wherein the at least one lighting element comprises at least one light emitting diode lighting element.

4. The solar powered wind chime according to claim 2 , wherein the at least one lighting element comprises at least one of the group including organic light emitting diode lighting elements, cold cathode ray tube lighting elements, incandescent bulb lighting elements, and fluorescent bulb lighting elements.

5. The solar powered wind chime according to claim 1 , wherein the rechargeable electrical power source is at least one rechargeable battery.

6. The solar powered wind chime according to claim 1 , wherein the rechargeable electrical power source is at least one removable rechargeable battery pack.

7. The solar powered wind chime according to claim 1 , wherein the rechargeable electrical power source is adapted to be recharged by a source of alternating current.

8. The solar powered wind chime according to claim 1 , wherein the rechargeable electrical power source is adapted to be recharged by a fuel cell.

9. The solar powered wind chime according to claim 1 , wherein the electrical subsystem comprises a subsystem selected from the group consisting of sound subsystems, video subsystems, cooling subsystems, heating subsystems, microphone subsystems, receiving and transmitting subsystems, motion actuating subsystems, water agitation subsystems, electrical motor subsystems, and combinations thereof.

10. The solar powered wind chime according to claim 1 , wherein the wind chime structure further comprises a blower suspended from the striker, and wherein the electrical subsystem further comprises at least one lighting element attached to the blower.

11. The solar powered wind chime according to claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the solar energy system is located remote from the wind chime.

12. A solar light module for illuminating a wind chime, the wind chime comprising one or more chimes and a striker, the module comprising:

a housing;

a rechargeable electrical power source carried by the housing;

a solar energy system conductively coupled to the rechargeable electrical power source for recharging the rechargeable electrical power source; and

at least one lighting element for illuminating the wind chime, the lighting element being suspended relative to the solar energy system and being conductively coupled to the solar energy system;

wherein the at least one lighting element includes a lighting element attached to the striker for illuminating at least one of the chimes in a front-lit fashion.

13. The solar light module according to claim 12 , further comprising: a translucent shield for protecting the lighting elements.

14. The solar light module according to claim 12 , further comprising: a translucent shield for protecting the lighting elements, the shield being adapted to reflect the light from the lighting elements.

15. The solar light module according to claim 13 , further comprising: a reflector operably associated with the shield for reflecting the light from the lighting elements.

16. The solar light module according to claim 12 , wherein the rechargeable electrical power source includes at least one rechargeable battery.

17. The solar light module according to claim 12 , wherein the rechargeable electrical power source includes at least one rechargeable battery pack adapted for remote recharging.

18. The solar light module according to claim 12 , wherein the rechargeable electrical power source is adapted for recharging from an alternating current source.

19. The solar light module according to claim 12 , wherein the rechargeable electrical power source is adapted for recharging from a fuel cell.

20. The solar light module according to claim 12 , wherein the at least one lighting element is a light emitting diode.

21. The solar light module according to claim 12 , wherein the at least one lighting element is selected from the group consisting of organic light emitting diodes, cold cathode ray tubes, fluorescent bulbs, incandescent bulbs, and combinations thereof.

22. The solar light module according to claim 12 , further comprising:

a control system for controlling the operation of the lighting element.
