Abstract

Collection makefile generators generate comprehensive makefiles for processing collections of computer files. In operation, the present collection makefile generator dynamically discovers collection content files, classifies them according to content type and required processing actions, and then generates a makefile for performing those actions. Importantly, all build order dependencies are properly maintained among multiple collection products and among individual collection content files. Automated collection makefile generators drastically improve the productivity of human workers by effectively reducing makefile creation and maintenance costs to zero. Collection makefile generators thus enable humans to easily generate complex makefiles in an automated, scalable way that was not previously possible.

Claims (36)

1 - 27 . (canceled)

28 . A method for generating a makefile for a collection comprising:

receiving a request to generate a makefile for a collection;

accessing collection information for said collection; and

generating a makefile for said collection.

29 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating a makefile includes using makefile service and makefile fragment template information.

30 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating a makefile includes using substitution strings representing collection instance values to replace placeholder strings in makefile fragments.

31 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating a makefile includes using standalone makefile service information.

32 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating a makefile includes using virtual platform information.

33 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating a makefile includes using information selected from the group consisting of include file search directory information and library file search directory information.

34 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating a makefile includes using product build order information.

35 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating a makefile includes using file build order information.

36 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating a makefile includes using parallelism limit information to calculate and generate parallel makefile targets.

37 . A system for generating a makefile for a collection comprising:

a memory configured to store collection information; and

a processor configured to receive a request to generate a makefile for a collection; access collection information for said collection; and generate a makefile for said collection.

38 . The system of claim 37 , wherein the processor is configured to generate a makefile at least in part by using makefile service and makefile fragment template information.

39 . The system of claim 37 , wherein the processor is configured to generate a makefile at least in part by using substitution strings representing collection instance values to replace placeholder strings in makefile fragments.

40 . The system of claim 37 , wherein the processor is configured to generate a makefile at least in part by using standalone makefile service information.

41 . The system of claim 37 , wherein the processor is configured to generate a makefile at least in part by using virtual platform information.

42 . The system of claim 37 , wherein the processor is configured to generate a make file at least in part by using information selected from the group consisting of include file search directory information and library file search directory information.

43 . The system of claim 37 , wherein the processor is configured to generate a makefile at least in part by using product build order information.

44 . The system of claim 37 , wherein the processor is configured to generate a makefile at least in part by using file build order information.

45 . The system of claim 37 , wherein the processor is configured to generate a makefile at least in part by using parallelism limit information to calculate and generate parallel makefile targets.

46 . A computer program product for generating a makefile for a collection, the computer program product being embodied in a computer readable medium and comprising computer instructions for:

receiving a request to generate a makefile for a collection;

accessing collection information for said collection; and

generating a makefile for said collection.

47 . A computer program product as recited in claim 46 , wherein generating a makefile includes using makefile service and makefile fragment template information.

48 . A computer program product as recited in claim 46 , wherein generating a makefile includes using substitution strings representing collection instance values to replace placeholder strings in makefile fragments.

49 . A computer program product as recited in claim 46 , wherein generating a makefile includes using standalone makefile service information.

50 . A computer program product as recited in claim 46 ,.wherein generating a makefile includes using virtual platform information.

51 . A computer program product as recited in claim 46 , wherein generating a makefile includes using information selected from the group consisting of include file search directory information and library file search directory information.

52 . A computer program product as recited in claim 46 , wherein generating a makefile includes using product build order information.

53 . A computer program product as recited in claim 46 , wherein generating a makefile includes using file build order information.

54 . A computer program product as recited in claim 46 , wherein generating a makefile includes using parallelism limit information to calculate and generate parallel makefile targets.
