Abstract

An inkjet printing mechanism includes an elongate chassis that spans a print area. An elongate ink distribution assembly is mounted on and extends a length of the chassis. The assembly has an inlet side, an outlet side, a plurality of ink paths that converge laterally to a longitudinally extending central region and a plurality of printhead chip mounting formations in fluid communication with the ink paths. A plurality of printhead chips is mounted in respective mounting formations to receive ink from the ink paths. An elongate platen assembly is mounted on the chassis such that the platen assembly spans the print area. A rotating mechanism rotates the platen assembly with respect to the chassis. A lateral displacement mechanism displaces the body towards and away from the printhead chips.

Claims (12)

1. An inkjet printing mechanism which comprises

an elongate chassis that spans a punt area;

an elongate ink distribution assembly mounted on and extending a length of the chassis and having an inlet side, an outlet side, a plurality of ink paths that converge laterally to a longitudinally extending central region and a plurality of printhead integrated circuit mounting formations in fluid communication with the ink paths, a plurality of printhead integrated circuits mounted in respective mounting formations to receive ink from the ink paths;

an elongate platen assembly mounted on the chassis such that the platen assembly spans the print area;

a rotating mechanism to rotate the platen assembly with respect to the chassis; and

a lateral displacement mechanism to displace the platen assembly towards and away from the printhead integrated circuits.

2. An inkjet printing mechanism as claimed in claim 1 , in which a control circuitry component is mounted on the inlet side of the ink distribution assembly and includes control circuitry connected to the printhead integrated circuits to control operation of the printhead integrated circuits.

3. An inkjet printing mechanism as claimed in claim 2 , which includes a number of tape automated bond films interposed between respective printhead integrated circuits and said control circuitry components to provide data and control signals to the printhead integrated circuits.

4. An inkjet printing mechanism as claimed in claim 1 , in which the elongate platen assembly includes an elongate body that defines a longitudinal platen surface for supporting a print medium during a printing operation carried out on the print medium, the rotating mechanism being configured to rotate the platen surface into and out of an operative position.

5. An inkjet printing mechanism as claimed in claim 4 , in which an elongate ink blotting member is arranged on the body such that the blotting member can be brought into and out of alignment with the printhead integrated circuits on rotation of the elongate body by the rotating mechanism.

6. An inkjet printing mechanism as claimed in claim 5 , in which the elongate body is hollow and defines a longitudinally extending slot, the elongate blotting member being received in the body with a portion extending from the slot.

7. An inkjet printing mechanism as claimed in claim 4 , in which the platen assembly includes a longitudinally extending capping assembly arranged on the body, the rotating and lateral displacement mechanisms being configured to displace the body towards the printhead integrated circuits when the capping assembly is aligned with the printhead integrated circuits.
