Abstract

A printhead assembly includes a carrier that spans a printing zone. An elongate ink distribution assembly is mounted to the carrier and defines at least one ink inlet and includes a laminated stack of structural layers. A first layer is in fluid communication with the, or each, ink inlet. A last layer defines at least one mounting slot for a respective printhead integrated circuit positioned in a central region. Intermediate layers define converging ink passages connecting the, or each, ink inlet and the, or each, mounting formation. A control circuitry component is mounted on the elongate ink distribution assembly. At least one flexible data and power connecter is attached to the control circuitry component at one end and sandwiched between two of the structural layers and connected to the at least one printhead integrated circuit at an opposite end.

Claims (12)

1. A printhead assembly that comprises

a carrier that spans a printing zone;

an elongate ink distribution assembly mounted to the carrier and defining at least one ink inlet and including a laminated stack of structural layers, with a first layer in fluid communication with the, or each, ink inlet, a last layer defining at least one mounting slot for a respective printhead integrated circuit positioned in a central region and intermediate layers defining converging ink passages connecting the, or each, ink inlet and the, or each, mounting formation;

a control circuitry component mounted on the elongate ink distribution assembly; and

at least one flexible data and power connecter attached to the control circuitry component at one end and sandwiched between two of the structural layers and connected to the at least one printhead integrated circuit at an opposite end.

2. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which the ink distribution assembly includes an elongate duct assembly that defines at least one elongate duct in fluid communication with the at least one ink inlet.

3. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 2 , in which the duct assembly includes a duct member that defines the, or each, duct and a cover mounted on the duct member to cover the, or each, duct.

4. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 3 , in which the, or each, inlet is arranged on the cover.

5. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 4 , in which the duct member has a plurality of substantially parallel ducts and a plurality of inlets in fluid communication with respective ducts so that discrete inks can be fed to respective ducts.

6. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 5 , in which the duct member defines an inert gas duct and the ink distribution assembly defines inert gas passages in fluid communication with the inert gas duct and opens into the at least one mounting slot.

A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 6 , in which the, or each, printhead integrated circuit comprises a substrate that defines a plurality of ink inlets in fluid communication with respective ink passages, a plurality of micro-electromechanical systems based nozzle arrangements positioned on the substrate in fluid communication with respective ink inlets, and a nozzle guard mounted on the substrate and spaced from the nozzle arrangements, a space between the nozzle arrangements and the nozzle guard being in fluid communication with the inert gas passages.

8. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which the, or each, flexible data and power connector is a tape automated bond strip.
