Abstract

Adaptive attachments used in combination with a blood pressure cuff enable various blood pressure measurements to be taken in a hospital or other setting having various single and/or dual lumen manual or electronic blood pressure measuring equipment with a single patient-worn cuff.

Claims (34)

1. A blood pressure measurement method, comprising the steps of:

providing a cuff including an interior chamber and an exterior surface, wherein a first adapter is substantially disposed within said exterior surface of said cuff, said first adapter including an opening extending into said interior chamber of said cuff to provide direct fluid communication between said exterior surface and said interior chamber;

placing said cuff in tactile communication with a patient;

releasably connecting a first end of a second adapter to said first adapter such that there is direct fluid communication between said first adapter and said second adapter without intermediate hoses between said first adapter and the first end of said second adapter;

selecting one of a plurality of hoses, wherein said plurality of hoses includes (a) at least one hose having a first end, a second end and a single lumen defined therebetween, and (b) at least one hose having a first end, a second end and more than one lumen defined therebetween;

releasably connecting said first end of said selected hose to a second end of said second adapter;

connecting said second end of said selected hose to at least a first blood pressure measuring device to enable a blood pressure measurement to be performed;

disconnecting said second end of said selected hose from said first blood pressure measuring device; and

connecting said second end of said selected hose to a second blood pressure measuring device to enable another blood pressure measurement to be performed, said second device being separate and distinct from said first device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least a first blood pressure measuring device is selected from the group consisting of a manual blood pressure measurement device and an electronic blood pressure measurement device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of placing said cuff in tactile communication with said patient is performed by wrapping said cuff about a limb of said patient.

4. A blood pressure measurement method, comprising the steps of:

providing a cuff including an interior chamber and an exterior surface, wherein a first adapter is substantially disposed within said exterior surface of said cuff, said first adapter including an opening extending into said interior chamber of said cuff to provide direct fluid communication between said exterior surface and said interior chamber;

placing said cuff in tactile communication with a patient;

releasably connecting a first end of a second adapter to said first adapter such that there is direct fluid communication between said first adapter and said second adapter without intermediate hoses between said first adapter and the first end of said second adapter;

selecting one of a plurality of hoses, wherein said plurality of hoses includes (a) at least one hose having a first end, a second end and a single lumen defined therebetween, and (b) at least one hose having a first end, a second end and more than one lumen defined therebetween;

releasably connecting said first end of said selected hose to a second end of said second adapter;

connecting said second end of said selected hose to at least a first blood pressure measuring device to enable a blood pressure measurement to be performed;

disconnecting said second end of said selected hose from said first blood pressure measuring device;

disconnecting said first end of said selected hose from said second adapter;

selecting another of said plurality of hoses;

connecting said first end of said another of said plurality of hoses to said second adapter, and

connecting said second end of said another of said plurality of hoses to a second blood pressure measuring device to enable another blood pressure measurement to be performed, said second device being separate and distinct from said first device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first end of said second adapter includes connection members enabling a snap fitting connection to a circumferential ridge of said first adapter.

6. A blood pressure measurement method, comprising the steps of:

providing a cuff including an interior chamber and an exterior surface, wherein an adapter is substantially disposed within said exterior surface of said cuff, said adapter including an opening extending into said interior chamber of said cuff to provide direct fluid communication between said exterior surface and said interior chamber and an exterior portion configured to interchangeably receive one of a plurality of hoses;

placing said cuff in tactile communication with a patient;

selecting one of said plurality of hoses, wherein said plurality of hoses includes (a) at least one hose having a first end, a second end and a single lumen defined therebetween, and (b) at least one hose having a first end, a second end and more than one lumen defined therebetween;

releasably connecting said first end of said selected hose to a connection end of said adapter;

connecting said second end of said selected hose to a first blood pressure measuring device to enable a blood pressure measurement to be performed;

disconnecting said second end of said selected hose from said first blood pressure measuring device;

selecting another one of said plurality of hoses, said hose selected being of the other group of (a) and (b);

releasably connecting said first end of said another selected hose to the connection end of said adapter; and

connecting said second end of said selected hose to a second, blood pressure measuring device to enable another blood pressure measurement to be performed, said second device being separate and distinct from said first device.
