Abstract

A system and method for remotely monitoring an individual, in accordance with some embodiments of the invention. More particularly, one or more physiological functions and/or physical activities of the individual may be monitored. In order to monitor the individual, a range to, and/or a range rate (i.e., velocity) of, one or more points on one or more surfaces of the individual (e.g., skin, clothing, lips, etc.) may be determined over time. Based on the determinations of the range and/or range rate of the points on the surfaces of the individual, the one or more physiological functions and/or physical activities of the individual may be monitored. This may enable the physiological functions and/or physical activities to be monitored remotely from the individual without access or proximity to the individual.

Claims (44)

1. A system for remotely monitoring an individual, the system comprising:

a laser radar system adapted to direct radiation directly on one or more points on a skin or clothing of the individual, adapted to receive radiation reflected back to the laser radar system directly from the one or more points on the skin or clothing of the individual, and adapted to determine ranges and/or range rates of the one or more points on the skin or clothing of the individual from the received radiation; and

a monitor module (i) adapted to estimate, based on the ranges and/or range rates determined by the laser radar system, gross body motion of the individual, (ii) adapted to estimate, based on the ranges and/or range rates determined by the laser radar system, oscillation of one or more surfaces on the individual that is distinct from the estimated gross body motion of the individual, and (iii) adapted to monitor one or more physiological functions and/or physical activities based on the estimated gross body motion and/or the estimated oscillation of the one or more surfaces,

wherein the estimate of the gross body motion is an estimate of body member motion and/or locomotion of the individual, and wherein the estimate of the oscillation of the one or more surfaces on the individual is an estimate of relatively fine surface oscillations.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the monitor module is adapted to monitor an involuntary physiological function based on the estimated oscillation of the skin or clothing of the individual, and is adapted to monitor a voluntary physical activity based on the estimated gross body motion.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the laser radar system is adapted to determine ranges and/or range rates of one or more points on the skin and clothing of the individual over a period of time from radiation that returns to the laser radar system from the one or more points on the skin and clothing of the individual.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more physiological functions or physical activities comprise one or both of a cardiovascular function and a respiratory function.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the one or more physiological functions or physical activities comprise one or more of a heart rate, a heart rate variability, a pulse transit time, a pulse shape, a respiration rate, or a respiratory effort.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more physiological functions or physical activities comprise one or more of speaking, coughing, sneezing, walking, or running.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system for remotely monitoring an individual operates without a reflector adapted to be mounted on the individual for reflecting the radiation back to the laser radar system.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the laser radar system is adapted to direct the radiation directly on one or more points on the skin or clothing of the individual and receive the radiation reflected back directly from the one or more points on the skin or clothing of the individual in a manner that is indiscernible to the individual.

9. A method of remotely monitoring an individual, the method comprising:

emitting a beam of radiation sequentially toward one or more points on a skin or clothing of the individual;

receiving a portion of the beam of radiation reflected directly from the one or more points on the skin or clothing of the individual;

determining ranges and/or range rates of the one or more points on the skin or clothing of the individual based on one or more aspects of the beam of radiation;

estimating, based on the determined ranges and/or range rates, gross body motion of the individual, wherein an estimate of the gross body motion of the individual is an estimate of body member motion and/or locomotion of the individual;

estimating, based on the determined ranges and/or range rates, oscillations of the skin or clothing of the individual that are distinct from the estimated gross body motion of the individual, wherein an estimate of oscillations of the skin or clothing of the individual is an estimate of relatively fine surface oscillations; and

monitoring one or more physiological functions and/or physical activities of the individual based on the estimated gross body motion and/or the estimated oscillations of the skin or clothing of the individual.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein monitoring the physiological functions and/or physical activities of the individual comprises:

monitoring an involuntary physiological function based on the estimated oscillation of the skin or clothing of the individual; and

monitoring a voluntary physical activity based on the estimated gross body motion.

The method of claim 9 , wherein emitting a beam of radiation sequentially toward one or more points on a skin or clothing of the individual comprises emitting a beam of radiation sequentially toward one or more points on the skin and clothing of the individual, and wherein receiving a portion of the beam of radiation reflected from the one or more points on the skin or clothing of the individual comprises receiving a portion of the beam of radiation reflected from the one or more points on the skin and clothing of the individual.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the one or more physiological functions or physical activities comprise one or both of a cardiovascular function and a respiratory function.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more physiological functions or physical activities comprise one or more of a heart rate, a heart rate variability, a pulse transit time, a pulse shape, a respiration rate, or a respiratory effort.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the one or more physiological functions or physical activities comprise one or more of speaking, coughing, sneezing, walking, or running.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the method of remotely monitoring an individual operates without a reflector adapted to be mounted on the individual for reflecting the radiation back to the laser radar system.

The method of claim 9 , wherein the emitting a beam of radiation sequentially toward one or more points on the skin or clothing of the individual and the receiving a portion of the beam of radiation reflected directly from the one or more points on the skin or clothing of the individual occurs in a manner that is indiscernible to the individual.

17. A system for monitoring an individual, the system comprising:

a first coherent laser radar section including:

a laser source that generates a first laser beam,

an interferometer (i) that is adapted to split the first laser beam into a first target beam that is directed toward a target location on the individual and a first reference beam, and (ii) that is adapted to generate a first combined target beam from a first reflected portion of the first target beam returning from the target location on the individual and the first reference beam;

a second coherent laser radar section including:

a laser source that generates a second laser beam,

an interferometer (i) that is adapted to split the second laser beam into a second target beam that is directed toward the target location on the individual simultaneously with the first target beam and a second reference beam, and (ii) that is adapted to generate a second combined target beam from a second reflected portion of the second target beam returning from the target location on the individual and the second reference beam;

one or more optical elements that are adapted to guide the first and second target beams such that the target location is positioned sequentially on one or more points directly on skin or clothing of the individual; and

a processor that is adapted to determine ranges and/or range rates of the one or more points directly on the skin or clothing of the individual over a period of time from the first combined target beam and the second combined target beam, and

wherein the processor is further adapted to monitor one or more physiological functions or physical activities of the individual based on the determined ranges and/or range rates.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the laser sources of the first and second coherent laser radar sections vary the frequency of the first and second laser beams independently from each other.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the first reference beam travels a first predetermined path length, the second reference beam travels a second predetermined path length, and the first predetermined path length is different from the second predetermined path length.

20. The system of claim 17 , wherein the one or more physiological functions or physical activities comprise one or both of a cardiovascular function and a respiratory function.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the one or more physiological functions or physical activities comprise one or more of a heart rate, a heart rate variability, a pulse transit time, a pulse shape, a respiration rate, or a respiratory effort.

22. The system of claim 17 , wherein the one or more physiological functions or physical activities comprise one or more of speaking, coughing, sneezing, walking, or running.

23. The system of claim 17 , wherein the system operates without a reflector adapted to be mounted on the individual for reflecting the radiation back to the laser radar system.

The system of claim 17 , wherein the first laser radar section is adapted to direct the first target beam to the individual and is adapted to receive the first returned portion of the first target beam directly from the individual in a manner that is indiscernible to the individual, and wherein the second laser radar section is adapted to direct the second target beam to the individual and is adapted to receive the second returned portion of the second target beam directly from the individual in the manner that is indiscernible to the individual.
