Abstract

Various embodiments for providing solid state illumination for endoscopy or borescopy are provided. Generally, various medical or industrial devices can include one or more solid state or other compact electro-optic illuminating devices located thereon. The solid state or compact electro-optic illuminating device can include, but is not limited to, a light emitting diode (LED), laser diode (LD), or other Infrared (IR) or Ultraviolet (UV) source. Solid state sources of various wavelengths may be used to illuminate an object for imaging or detecting purpose or otherwise conditioning purpose. The solid state illuminating device may be placed on the exterior surface of the device, inside the device, deployably coupled to the distal end of the device, or otherwise disposed on the device.

Claims (27)

1. A device for insertion into a body cavity, the device comprising:

an elongate hollow tube with an internal lumen between a distal opening at a distal end and a proximal opening at a proximal end, the elongate hollow tube including a rigid distal portion associated with the distal opening configured to be at least partially inserted into the body cavity;

a deployable member operably coupled to the rigid distal portion and having an insertion position and a deployed position;

at least one solid state electro-optic element coupled to the deployable member, wherein the at least one solid state electro-optic element provides illumination at one or more electromagnetic wavelengths, wherein the at least one solid state electro-optic element is configured to be selectively turned on or off; and

a flexible portion of the elongate hollow tube annularly coupled to the rigid distal portion and extending proximal therefrom, the flexible portion being devoid of optical fibers;

at least one imaging lens element positioned in the rigid distal portion, wherein an input aperture of the at least one imaging lens and/or the at least one imaging element extends substantially the entire length of a diameter of the internal lumen or distal opening.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the deployable member is positioned in front of the rigid distal portion when in the insertion position, the deployable member is positioned outside the profile of the rigid distal portion when in the deployed position.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the deployable member containing the solid state electro-optic element is selectively disposed within the rigid distal portion such that it can be selectively removed from the rigid distal portion.

4. The device of claim 2 , wherein the deployable member is rotatably coupled to the rigid distal portion via a rotational hinge, the rotational hinge forming a rotational axis.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the rotational axis of the rotational hinge is not parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tubular portion.

6. The device of claim 4 , wherein the rotational axis of the rotational hinge is orthogonal relative to a longitudinal axis of the rigid distal portion.

7. The device of claim 2 , where the deployable member conducts heat from the solid state electro-optic element to the proximal end of the tubular portion.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein multiple solid state electro-optic elements with other wavelengths than the three primary illumination colors are used, matching the image detection frame capture sequence to that of the synchronized color illumination sources.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein three color LEDs including a red chip, a green chip and a blue chip are time synchronized with a black and white camera system to collect three synchronized color component images.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein electro-optic element is configured to polarize the radiation emitted therefrom.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein power and control signals for the electro-optic element is provided by an electrical connector at the proximal end of the elongate hollow tube and over the elongate hollow tube to the electro-optic element.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the flexible portion of the elongate hollow tube extends from the proximal opening all the way to the rigid distal portion, and thereby is configured to receive a separate instrument inside the hollow flexible tubular portion that extends all the way to the rigid distal portion.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the elongate hollow tube portion further comprises a conductive layer to conduct heat away from the electro-optic element.

14. A device for insertion into a body cavity, the device comprising:

an elongate hollow tube with an internal lumen between a distal opening at a distal end and a proximal opening at a proximal end, the elongate hollow tube including a rigid distal portion associated with the distal opening configured to be at least partially inserted into the body cavity;

a plurality of deployable members each operably coupled to the rigid distal portion and having an insertion position and a deployed position;

a plurality of solid state electro-optic elements coupled to the deployable member, wherein the solid state electro-optic elements provide illumination at one or more electromagnetic wavelengths, wherein the solid state electro-optic elements are configured to be selectively turned on or off;

a flexible portion of the elongate hollow tube annularly coupled to the rigid distal portion and extending proximal therefrom, the flexible portion being devoid of optical fibers; and

at least one imaging sensor and imaging lens element positioned in the rigid distal portion, wherein an input aperture of the at least one imaging lens element extends substantially the entire length of a diameter of the internal lumen or distal opening.

15. The device as recited in claim 14 , the tubular portion further comprising a receiving portion formed in the rigid distal portion, the receiving portion configured to receive at least a portion of the deployable members.

16. The device as recited in claim 14 , wherein the solid state electro optic element is a solid state electro optic element is at least one of a light emitting device (LED), laser diode (LD), ultraviolet (UV) light source, or infrared (IR) light source, a detector element, an optical detector, or a combination thereof.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein one or more solid state electro-optic chips are inserted into the body, independent of one another, via separate illumination bodies.
