Abstract

Methods and kits are provided for manipulating and predicting the reproductive capacity of a female subject. The presence of endogenous neurotrophins and addition of exogenous neurotrophins, particularly BDNF, NT-4/5, and NGF, increase the reproductive capacity of a female patient by binding to receptors on the oocytes and stimulating maturation of the oocytes. Administration of antagonists act as a contraceptive because the antagonists prevent the neurotrophins from binding to oocyte receptors. Neurotrophins may also be used to stimulate the maturation of oocyte in vitro.

Claims (7)

1. A method of stimulating oocyte maturation in an oocyte of a female subject, comprising administering brain-derived neurotrophic factor in its native sequence to at least one oocyte of said female subject, wherein the stimulation of oocyte maturation alleviates an infertility condition.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein brain-derived neurotrophic factor in its native sequence is administered, and wherein said brain-derived neurotrophic factor is administered in combination with neurotrophin-4/5 in its native sequence, or nerve growth factor in its native sequence.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stimulation of oocyte maturation occurs via a paracrine signaling pathway.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the neurotrophin is combined with a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is administered parenterally.

6. A method of effecting oocyte maturation, comprising:

administering brain-derived neurotrophic factor in its native sequence in a media to at least one harvested oocyte wherein the brain-derived neurotrophic factor binds to a receptor on the oocyte and stimulates oocyte maturation.
