Abstract

Cameras, radios, televisions, set top boxes, telephones, kitchen appliances, and other electrical devices have their own IP address, and communicate using an internetworking protocol. Of particular interest are those devices that utilize some form of mass storage. Communication of the packets between or among elements can occur using any suitable package switched network (or combination of networks), including the Internet. The preferred protocol for communicating packets is IP, and communication of the packets between elements can advantageously occur by virtualizing a native bus using IP. It is especially contemplated that the inventive elements can be disaggregated outside the housing of a device, at distances of several meters or more. Communication can be hard wired, or can include wireless aspects. Adapters are also contemplated that permit traditional elements to be addressed by their own IP addresses.

Claims (49)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a first interface configured to receive a first packet, transmitted to the apparatus from an adapter associated with a first element of an electrical device over a bus, the first packet including a first Internet Protocol (IP) address that is uniquely associated with a first storage area of a second element of the electrical device;

a second interface configured to be coupled to the second element; and

a translator coupled with the first interface and the second interface and configured to receive the first packet from the first interface and to issue a command to the second element through the second interface based at least in part on the first packet, the translator further configured to receive a second packet from the first interface, the second packet including a second IP address that identifies a second storage area of the second element.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus, the first element, and the second element are disposed within a common housing.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first interface is a wired interface and the bus comprises a native bus of the electrical device.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein characteristics of the second element are discoverable by a third element that is external to the common housing by use of a query that includes the first IP address.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second element comprises a disk drive.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the first storage area comprises a partition of a storage medium of the disk drive.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first element comprises a processor.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first interface is a wireless interface and the bus comprises a virtual component bus.

9. An electrical device comprising

a bus;

first and second elements;

first and second adapters respectively coupled to the first and second elements and further coupled to the bus,

the first adapter configured to receive, from the second adapter over the bus, a first packet including first Internet Protocol (IP) address that is uniquely associated with the first element, and to issue a first command to the first element based at least in part on the first packet,

the second adapter configured to receive a second packet, from a third element over the bus, the second packet having a second IP address that is uniquely associated with the second element and to issue a second command to the second element based at least in part on the second packet; and

a housing to house the first and second elements, the first and second adapters, and the bus.

10. The electrical device of claim 9 , wherein characteristics of the first element are discoverable by a fourth element that is external to the housing by use of a query that includes the first IP address.

11. The electrical device of claim 9 , wherein the first element comprises a disk drive.

12. The electrical device of claim 11 , wherein the first IP address identifies a partition of a storage medium of the disk drive.

13. The electrical device of claim 12 , wherein the partition is a first partition and the first adapter is further configured to receive a third packet, the third packet including a third IP address that identifies a second partition.

14. The electrical device of claim 11 , wherein the first element comprises a processor.

15. A method comprising:

receiving, at a first adapter associated with a first element of an electrical device, a first packet transmitted to the first adapter from a second adapter associated with a second element of the electrical device over a bus, the first packet including a first Internet Protocol (IP) address that is uniquely associated with a first storage area of the first element;

receiving, at the first adapter, a second packet including a second IP address that identifies a second storage area of the first element;

translating the first packet by the first adapter; and

issuing a first command to the first element based at least in part on the first packet;

translating the second packet by the first adapter; and

issuing a second command to the first element based at least in part on the second packet.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein said receiving the first packet comprises receiving the first packet via a wired interface.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first element comprises a disk drive.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first IP address identifies a partition of a storage medium of the disk drive.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the partition is a first partition and the method further comprises:

receiving a third packet over the bus, the third packet including a third IP address that identifies a second partition.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the second element comprises a processor.

21. A method comprising:

receiving a first packet from a first interface of an apparatus, transmitted to the apparatus from an adapter associated with a first element of an electrical device over a bus, the first packet including a first Internet Protocol (IP) address that is uniquely associated with a first storage area of a second element of the electrical device; and

receiving a second packet from the first interface, the second packet including a second IP address that identifies a second storage area of the second element;

generating and issuing, through a second interface of the apparatus, first and second commands to the second element based at least in part on the first and second packets; and

accessing the first and second storage areas of the second element based on the first and second commands, respectively.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the apparatus, the first element, and the second element are disposed within a common housing.

23. A method comprising:

receiving, from an adapter over a bus, a first packet including a first Internet Protocol (IP) address that is uniquely associated with a first element, wherein the first element, a second element associated with the adapter, and the bus are disposed in a common housing;

issuing a command to the first element based at least in part on the first packet;

receiving a second packet, from a third element over the bus, the second packet having a second IP address that is uniquely associated with the second element; and

issuing a second command to the second element based at least in part on the second packet.

24. The method of claim 23 , further comprising:

responding to a query including the first IP address with characteristics of the first element, the query being from a third element that is external to the common housing.
