Abstract

A plug connector is disclosed that has a body portion and a circuit card extending forwardly of a mating face of the connector. The circuit card is protected in place by a protective flanges that extends forwardly from the body portion above the circuit card to protect it from stubbing and to provide a means for aligning the plug connector with a receptacle connector.

Claims (31)

1. A plug connector for connecting wires to a mating connector, comprising:

a connector housing, the connector housing including a forward face;

a circuit card having a leading edge with contacts for mating with the mating connector and a trailing edge with contacts for termination to a plurality of wires, said circuit card being disposed in said connector housing such that the circuit card leading edge extends forwardly from said connector housing forward face, the circuit card trailing edge being disposed within said connector housing;

a plurality of wires terminated to contacts of said circuit card trailing edge and extending out of said connector housing; and,

said connector housing including a first flange extending forwardly from said connector housing forward face in spaced apart relation to one side from said circuit card, said connector housing further including a pair of engagement lugs protruding outwardly from said housing, said engagement lugs each defining a respective stop surface in substantially perpendicular relation to said forwardly-extending circuit card and first flange for limiting forward movement of the plug connector into mating engagement with a mating connector.

2. The plug connector of claim 1 , wherein said first flange includes an angled lead-in configuration along side edges thereof.

3. The plug connector of claim 1 , wherein said first flange includes an engagement recess disposed on a top surface thereof.

4. The plug connector of claim 1 , wherein said engagement lugs are T-shaped projections.

5. The plug connector of claim 1 , wherein said connector housing includes a transverse slot disposed in said forward face through which said circuit card extends.

6. The plug connector of claim 1 , wherein said circuit card projects forwardly of said connector housing forward face for a first distance and said first flange projects forwardly of said connector housing forward face for a second distance, the second distance being greater than said first distance.

7. The plug connector of claim 1 in which said first flange is disposed in vertically spaced relation to said circuit card, and said engagement lugs each comprise a registration portion for vertically aligning said circuit card and first flange in predetermined orientation with respect to a mating connector and a stop portion which defines said stop surface.

8. The plug connector of claim 1 in which said housing has upper and lower surfaces in substantially parallel relation to said first flange and side surfaces on opposite lateral sides of said upper and lower surfaces, and said engagement lugs extend in outwardly protruding fashion from said housing side surfaces.

9. The plug connector of claim 1 including a second flange extending forwardly from said connector housing forward face in spaced apart relation to an opposite side of said circuit card.

10. A connector for engaging a mating connector, comprising:

a housing with a mating face thereon for mating with the opposing connector;

a mating blade portion projecting forwardly of the mating face, said mating blade portion having a plurality of conductive contacts supported thereon;

a flange extending forwardly from said mating face in vertically spaced apart relation to said circuit card, said connector housing further including a pair of engagement lugs protruding outwardly from said housing, said engagement lugs each including a registration portion for vertically aligning said circuit card and flange in predetermined vertical orientation with respect to a mating connector and a stop portion which defines a stop surface in substantially perpendicular relation to said forwardly extending circuit card and flange for limiting forward movement of said plug into mating engagement with a mating connector.

11. The connector of claim 10 , wherein said mating blade portion has a width which is less than a width of said flange.

12. The connector of claim 10 , wherein said flange includes an angled lead-in configuration along side edges thereof to facilitate insertion of said connector into an opposing, outer guide member.

13. The connector of claim 10 , wherein said mating blade portion includes a circuit card.

14. The plug connector of claim 10 in which said flange has an inner surface disposed in facing relation to said circuit card, said flange having side surfaces on opposite lateral sides of said inner surface, and said flange side surfaces having forward angled portions extending inwardly toward each other in a forward direction toward a terminal end of the flange for guiding said flange and connector housing into predetermined mated relation with a mating connector.

15. The plug connector of claim 10 in which said housing has upper and lower surfaces in substantially parallel relation to said flange and side surfaces on opposite lateral sides of said upper and lower surfaces, and said engagement lugs extend in outwardly protruding fashion from said housing side surfaces.

16. A plug connector for connecting wires to a mating connector, comprising:

a connector housing, the connector housing including a forward face;

a circuit card having a leading edge with contacts for mating with the mating connector and a trailing edge with contacts for termination to a plurality of wires, said circuit card being disposed in said connector housing such that the circuit card leading edge extends from said connector housing forward face, the circuit card trailing edge being disposed within said connector housing;

a plurality of wires terminated to contacts of said circuit card trailing edge and exiting from said connector housing; and,

said connector housing including a first flange formed as part of said housing and extending from said connector housing forward face, said first flange having an inner surface disposed in facing relation to said circuit card, said first flange having side surfaces on opposite lateral sides of said inner surface, and said first flange side surfaces having forward angled portions extending inwardly toward each other in a forward direction toward a terminal end of the flange for guiding said first flange and connector housing into predetermined mated relation with a mating connector.

17. The plug connector of claim 16 , wherein said first flange is disposed above said circuit card.

18. The plug connector of claim 16 , wherein said circuit card projects forwardly of said connector housing forward face for a first distance and said first flange projects forwardly of said connector housing forward face for a second distance, the second distance being greater than said first distance.

19. The plug connector of claim 16 , wherein said flange includes an angled lead-in configuration disposed along at least one side edge thereof.

20. The plug connector of claim 16 in which said angled portions of said side surfaces are defined by substantially straight surfaces that taper inwardly toward each other in a direction toward the terminal end of the flange.
