Abstract

Methods and apparatus for establishing communication links, used to support communications sessions with one or more end nodes, e.g., mobile devices, are described. Various features are directed to a mobile node controlling the establishment of initial links to a first access node and the establishment of new links from a first access node to a second access node during a handoff operation using highly efficient messages and signal.

Claims (47)

1. A method of operating a base station, the method comprising:

receiving one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information, from a node which is different from a wireless terminal to which said received one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information corresponds;

receiving a reduced size Mobile IP registration message from said wireless terminal; and

generating from said received reduced size Mobile IP registration message and said received one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information at least one of a Mobile IPv4 or Mobile IPv6 registration message.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving a reduced size Mobile IP registration message includes receiving the registration message over an air link.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said reduced size Mobile IP registration message includes a base station identifier identifying said base station.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said node which is different than the wireless terminal is an authentication and authorization server.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said node which is different than the wireless terminal is another base station to which said wireless terminal was previously connected to.

6. The method of claim 2 , the method further comprising:

storing, prior to receiving said reduced size Mobile IP registration message, state information corresponding to said wireless terminal, said state information including at least said received one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein generating at least one of a Mobile IPv4 and Mobile IPv6 registration message includes generating a registration message including a Home Agent Address value which was not included in said reduced size Mobile IP registration message.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein said generating at least one of a Mobile IPv4 and Mobile IPv6 registration message further includes incorporating a Care-of Address, that identifies said base station, into said generated Mobile IPv4 and Mobile IPv6 registration message.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein said node which is different from the wireless terminal is an authentication and authorization server.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein said generating at least one of a Mobile IPv4 and Mobile IPv6 registration message further includes including a Home Agent Address value, the Home Address value being a Home Agent Address value that was received from said node.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the Home Address value is zero when said stored information corresponding to said wireless terminal does not include a non-zero Home Address value.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein said reduced size Mobile IP registration message includes a message identifier, said message identifier includes at least one of a sequence number and a time stamp.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein said message identifier includes both said sequence number and time stamp.

14. A base station comprising:

a memory including stored state information corresponding to a wireless terminal, said state information including at least one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information received from a node which is different from said wireless terminal;

a receiver module for receiving a reduced size Mobile IP registration message;

a signal generation module for generating from said reduced size Mobile IP registration message and said one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information received from the node which is different from said wireless terminal, at least one of a Mobile IPv4 or Mobile IPv6 registration message.

15. The base station of claim 14 , wherein said receiver module is a radio receiver module for receiving the registration message over an air link.

16. The base station of claim 15 , wherein said memory further includes:

a stored reduced size Mobile IP registration message that includes a base station identifier that identifies said base station.

17. The base station of claim 15 , wherein said node which is different from the wireless terminal is an authentication and authorization server.

18. The base station of claim 17 , further comprising:

a network interface for receiving said at least one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information from said node which is different from said wireless terminal.

19. The base station of claim 17 wherein said signal generation module includes means for accessing said stored state information to retrieve from the stored state information a Home Agent Address value which was not included in said reduced size Mobile IP registration message but which is to be included in at least one of a Mobile IPv4 or Mobile IPv6 registration message to be generated from a reduced size Mobile IP registration message.

20. The base station of claim 19 , wherein said signal generation module further includes means for obtaining a Home Agent Address value that was received from said said node from said stored state information for inclusion in said at least one of a Mobile IPv4 or Mobile IPv6 registration message to be generated.

21. A device comprising a processor configured to control a base station to implement a method, the method comprising:

receiving one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information, from a node which is different from a wireless terminal to which said received one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information corresponds;

receiving a reduced size Mobile IP registration message from said wireless terminal; and

generating from said received reduced size Mobile IP registration message and said received one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information at least one of a Mobile IPv4 or Mobile IPv6registration message.

22. The device of claim 21 , wherein receiving a reduced size Mobile IP registration message includes receiving the registration message over an air link.

23. The device of claim 22 , wherein said reduced size Mobile IP registration message includes a base station identifier identifying said base station.

24. A computer readable medium embodying computer executable instructions for controlling a base station to implement a method, the method comprising:

receiving one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information, from a node which is different from a wireless terminal to which said received one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information corresponds;

receiving a reduced size Mobile IP registration message from said wireless terminal; and

generating from said received reduced size Mobile IP registration message and said received one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information at least one of a Mobile IPv4 or Mobile IPv6 registration message.

25. The computer readable medium of claim 24 , wherein receiving a reduced size Mobile IP registration message includes receiving the registration message over an air link.

26. The computer readable medium of claim 25 , wherein said reduced size Mobile IP registration message includes a base station identifier identifying said base station.

27. A base station comprising:

memory means for storing state information corresponding to a wireless terminal, said state information including at least one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information received from a node which is different from said wireless terminal;

receiver means for receiving a reduced size Mobile IP registration message; and

signal generation means for generating from said reduced size Mobile IP registration message and said one of a Home Address, Home Agent Address, and wireless terminal profile information received from a node which is different from said wireless terminal, at least one of a Mobile IPv4 or Mobile IPv6 registration message.

28. The base station of claim 27 , wherein said receiver means is a radio receiver means for receiving the registration message over an air link.

29. The base station of claim 28 , wherein said node which is different from the wireless terminal is an authentication and authorization server.
