Abstract

An optical transmission fiber including a core having a first index of refraction, a cladding material located around the core and having a second index of refraction less than the first index of refraction, a first coating material located around a first portion of the cladding material and having a third index of refraction greater than the second index of refraction, and a second coating material located around a second portion of the cladding material and having a fourth index of refraction less than the second index of refraction.

Claims (19)

1. A method, comprising:

removing energy from an optical transmission fiber having:

a cladding material located around a core, said core having a first index of refraction, said cladding material having a second index of refraction less than said first index of refraction; and

a coating material located around said cladding material, said coating material having a third index of refraction less than said second index of refraction;

wherein said coating comprises a first coating material around a first portion of said cladding and a second coating material around a second portion of said cladding, wherein said second coating material has said third index of refraction, and said first coating material has a fourth index of refraction greater than said second index of refraction, and

wherein said energy is removed from said optical transmission fiber with an energy removal device located adjacent said coating material.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 ,

wherein said energy removal device comprises a mode stripper.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein said energy removal device comprises a heat sink coupled to said coating material.

4. The method as recited in claim 3 wherein said heat sink comprises a thermally conductive compound formed around said coating material.

5. The method as recited in claim 3 wherein said energy removal device is an ambient environment around said coating material.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein said energy is selected from the group consisting of:

light energy; and

heat energy.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein said second coating material substantially confines said energy escaping from said core within said first portion of said cladding material for transmission to said energy removal location.

8. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein said energy removal device is located adjacent said first coating material.

9. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein said optical transmission fiber couples a transmitter to a receiver in an optical transmission system.

10. The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein said optical transmission system includes said energy removal device.

11. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein said optical transmission fiber is optically coupled to an optical device.
