Abstract

An ink jet nozzle arrangement for ejecting ink includes a substrate that defines an ink inlet. Integrated circuitry is positioned on the substrate. A nozzle chamber structure is positioned on the substrate and defines a nozzle chamber in fluid communication with the ink inlet and an ink ejection port in fluid communication with the nozzle chamber from which ink is ejected. A paddle is positioned in the nozzle chamber and arranged to move in the nozzle chamber to thereby eject ink from the nozzle. An elongate actuator is connected at one end to the substrate to receive actuating pulses from the integrated circuitry and to the paddle at the other end so that, on receipt of said actuating pulses, the actuator and thus the paddle is moved reciprocally to eject the ink from the ink ejection port. A movement sensor is arranged on the actuator and the substrate to determine one of a degree and a rate of movement of the actuator.

Claims (13)

1. An ink jet nozzle arrangement for ejecting ink, the ink jet nozzle arrangement comprising:

a substrate that defines an ink inlet;

integrated circuitry positioned on the substrate;

a nozzle chamber structure positioned on the substrate and defining a nozzle chamber in fluid communication with the ink inlet and an ink ejection port in fluid communication with the nozzle chamber from which ink is ejected;

a paddle positioned in the nozzle chamber and arranged to move in the nozzle chamber to thereby eject ink from the nozzle;

an elongate actuator connected at one end to the substrate to receive actuating pulses from the integrated circuitry and to the paddle at the other end so that, on receipt of said actuating pulses, the actuator and thus the paddle is moved reciprocally to eject the ink from the ink ejection port; and

a movement sensor arranged on the actuator and the substrate to determine one of a degree and a rate of movement of the actuator.

2. An ink jet nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , in which the ink inlet is in the form of an ink supply chamber defined by the substrate and which is separated from the nozzle chamber by the paddle.

3. An ink jet nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , in which the actuator includes an arm which is fast with the paddle.

4. An ink jet nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 3 , in which the arm is fast with the substrate at said one end, via a support that extends from the substrate.

5. An ink jet nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , in which the movement sensor includes a switch arrangement configured to be closed and opened on movement of the actuator.

6. An ink jet nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 5 , in which the switch arrangement includes a moving contact positioned on the actuator and a fixed contact positioned on the substrate and connected to the integrated circuitry.

7. An ink jet nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 6 , in which the integrated circuitry includes amplifier elements and a microprocessor arrangement to amplify and process the signals generated through operation of the switch arrangement.
