Abstract

A system for determining at least one condition of a seal including an optical fiber for transmitting light from a light source. The optical fiber is embedded in the seal and operatively coupled to an interferometric system. The interferometric system is operatively coupled to a processor. The interferometric system provides the processor with information relating to wear of the optical fiber, and the processor determines wear of the seal, rate of wear and remaining useful life of the seal based on the information relating to wear of the optical fiber.

Claims (15)

1. A sensor device comprising:

a seal associated with a motor; and

a first optical fiber embedded within the seal associated with the motor via an epoxy material, the first optical fiber facilitates monitoring of pressure on the seal, the first optical fiber comprises a plurality permanently induced microbends; and

a sensing component that determines a change in pressure in a surrounding area of the at least first optical fiber based at least in part upon a change in amplitude of at least one of the plurality of microbends.

2. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a second optical fiber embedded within the seal via an epoxy material, the second optical fiber facilitates continuous measurement of wear of the seal.

3. The device of claim 2 , the second optical fiber facilitates continuous measurement of at least one of radial wear between an inner surface and outer surface of the seal and axial wear occurring within the seal in a direction substantially co-axial to a shaft.

4. The device of claim 3 , further comprising a coated third optical fiber, the coating facilitates sensing a fluctuation in temperature associated with the seal.

5. The device of claim 4 , the coating comprising a temperature-sensitive index of refraction material.

6. The device of claim 4 , the third optical fiber is coupled to a temperature sensor.

7. The device of claim 6 , the temperature sensor directs a measuring beam through the third optical fiber, the measuring beam originating from a light source.

8. The device of claim 7 , the temperature sensor converts portions of the measuring beam reflected from the shaft into an electrical signal.

9. The device of claim 8 , further comprising a processor that determines a temperature in a surrounding area of the shaft based at least in part upon the electrical signal.

10. The device of claim 1 , the plurality of permanently induced microbends disposed as periodic undulations along a longitudinal axis of the at least first optical fiber.

11. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a piezo-based device that facilitates real-time control of the pressure on the seal.

12. The device of claim 11 , the piezo-based device is embedded throughout the seal via an epoxy material.
