Abstract

Apparatus and methods for insulating tissue during therapeutic procedures.

Claims (40)

1. A therapeutic method, comprising the steps of:

positioning an inflatable portion of an inflatable insulation device in an insertion area that extends from an exterior skin surface to a body lumen;

inflating the insulation device; and

performing a therapeutic procedure at a location in spaced relation to the insertion area while the inflatable portion of the inflatable insulation device is inflated and in the insertion area with a fluid at a temperature other than body temperature that has passed through the insertion area.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the step of positioning an inflatable portion of an inflatable insulation device in an insertion area comprises the steps of:

providing a therapeutic device that includes the inflatable insulation device and a therapeutic element; and

passing the therapeutic device through the insertion area until the inflatable portion of the inflatable insulation device is within the insertion area and the therapeutic element is located at the location in spaced relation to the insertion area.

3. A method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the step of performing a therapeutic procedure comprises the steps of:

passing the fluid at a temperature other than body temperature through the therapeutic device after inflating the inflatable insulation device.

4. A method as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the step of passing a fluid at a temperature other than body temperature through the therapeutic device comprises passing cryogenic fluid through the therapeutic device.

5. A therapeutic method, comprising the steps of:

positioning at least a portion of an inflatable insulation device in an insertion area that extends from an exterior skin surface to a body lumen;

inflating the insulation device; and

performing a therapeutic procedure at a location in spaced relation to the insertion area by

passing a therapeutic device, including a shaft and a therapeutic element, through the inflatable insulation device prior to inflating the inflatable insulation device, and

passing a fluid at a temperature other than body temperature through the shaft to the therapeutic element while at least a portion of the inflatable insulation device is inflated and in the insertion area.

6. A method as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the step of passing a fluid at a temperature other than body temperature through the shaft to the therapeutic element comprises passing cryogenic fluid through the shaft to the therapeutic element.

7. A therapeutic method, comprising the steps of:

positioning an inflatable portion of an inflatable insulation device in an insertion area that extends from an exterior skin surface to a vein;

inflating the insulation device; and

performing a therapeutic procedure at a location in spaced relation to the insertion area while the inflatable portion of the inflatable insulation device is inflated and in the insertion area.

8. A therapeutic method, comprising the steps of:

positioning at least a portion of an inflatable insulation device in an insertion area that extends from an exterior skin surface of a patient's thigh to a femoral vein;

inflating the insulation device; and

performing a therapeutic procedure at a location in spaced relation to the insertion area while at least a portion of the inflatable insulation device is inflated and in the insertion area.

9. A method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the step of performing a therapeutic procedure comprises forming a lesion in a pulmonary vein.

10. A therapeutic method, comprising the steps of:

positioning at least a portion of an inflatable insulation device in an insertion area that extends from an exterior skin surface to a vein;

inflating the insulation device; and

performing a therapeutic procedure at a location in spaced relation to the insertion area by

passing a therapeutic device, including a shaft and a therapeutic element, through the inflatable insulation device prior to inflating the inflatable insulation device, and

passing a fluid at a temperature other than body temperature through the shaft to the therapeutic element while at least a portion of the inflatable insulation device is inflated and in the insertion area.

11. A method as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the step of passing a fluid at a temperature other than body temperature through the shaft to the therapeutic element comprises passing cryogenic fluid through the shaft to the therapeutic element.

12. A therapeutic method, comprising the steps of:

passing a therapeutic device that includes an inflatable insulation device and a therapeutic element through an insertion area that extends from an exterior skin surface to a vein until at least a portion of the inflatable insulation device is within the insertion area and the therapeutic element is located at the location in spaced relation to the insertion area;

inflating the insulation device; and

performing a therapeutic procedure at a location in spaced relation to the insertion area while at least a portion of the inflatable insulation device is inflated and in the insertion area.

13. A method as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the step of performing a therapeutic procedure comprises the steps of:

passing a fluid at a temperature other than body temperature through the therapeutic device after inflating the inflatable insulation device.

14. A method as claimed in claim 13 , wherein the step of passing a fluid at a temperature other than body temperature through the therapeutic device comprises passing cryogenic fluid through the therapeutic device.
