Abstract

A liquid-gas separator assembly is used in separating gas bubbles from a liquid coolant. The assembly includes a cylindrical housing containing a central tube which is surrounded by an annular chamber. The annular chamber is defined by the outer surface of the central tube and the inner surface of the cylindrical housing. An inlet line injects a stream of the coolant from the fuel cell stack area of the power plant into the bottom of the central tube in a tangential flow pattern so that the coolant and gas bubble mixture swirls upwardly through the central tube. The swirling flow pattern of the coolant and gas bubble mixture causes the gas bubbles to separate from the liquid coolant. The gaseous component of the separated mixture is then expelled from the housing through an outlet in the upper portion of the housing, and the coolant liquid descends through the annular chamber to the bottom of the housing.

Claims (8)

1. A method for operating a fuel cell power plant fuel cell stack, said method comprising:

a) the step of separating gas bubbles from a liquid coolant in the fuel cell power plant cell stack, said separating step comprising:

b) the step of creating a swirling stream of a liquid coolant-gas bubble mixture in a separator;

c) the step of channeling said swirling stream of the liquid gas bubble mixture upwardly into a vertically elongated tubular member in the separator wherein the liquid component of the mixture is centrifugally forced to flow outwardly and upwardly through said tubular member along an imperforate inner wall of said tubular member, and wherein the gas component of said mixture separates from the liquid component and the gas component flows upwardly through a central region of said tubular member;

d) the step of causing the separated liquid component to flow under the influence of gravity downwardly along an outside surface of said tubular member whereby said separated liquid component will not remix with the separated gas component;

e) the step of nulling the swirling flow path of the separated liquid component during its downward flow along the outside surface of the tubular member so as to create a linear flow pattern in the separated liquid component;

f) the step of cooling the separated liquid coolant in a heat exchanger; and

g) the step of returning the cooled liquid coolant to said fuel cell stack to cool the latter.
