Abstract

A method and system for facilitating information exchange between individuals and entities interacting on a shared project are provided, and more particularly to a method and system for horizontal. i.e., non-hierarchical, participation in and/or contribution to a spreadsheet-based project. The method and system is Web-based and utilizes conventional browser and spreadsheet technology to achieve collaborative exchanges of information on an enterprise-wide basis. The method and system also facilitate efficacious remote information access and exchange, e.g., over a computer network such as the Internet and/or the World Wide Web, through a caching function that combines individual queries initiated by a spreadsheet program before transmitting across a network to a server for consideration.

Claims (35)

1. A system for facilitating information exchange, the system comprising:

a server that has at least one database and that is in communication with a network, and

a client computer,

wherein the server is configured to:

receive a request from the client computer to retrieve at least one supporting document stored within the at least one database, wherein a collaborative group that includes a plurality of users is defined within the at least one database, wherein the collaborative group has access to a spreadsheet operatively associated with the at least one supporting document;

retrieve the at least one supporting document from the at least one database in response to receiving the request; and

provide the client computer with access to the at least one supporting document that is operatively associated with the spreadsheet such that the at least one supporting document is displayed along with the spreadsheet at the client computer;

wherein the client computer is configured to provide a screen view that is displayed separately from the spreadsheet; and

wherein the screen view conveys a submission status of the spreadsheet, provides information concerning a hyperlink to the at least one supporting document and provides a direct link to an email/message posting wizard.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the server is operatively associated with enterprise sources of information.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the collaborative group includes geographically dispersed individuals having different functional responsibilities for an enterprise.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one supporting document is linked to a specific data cell from a plurality of data cells of the spreadsheet.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one supporting document is selected from the group consisting of a supporting spreadsheet, a word processing document, a slide presentation, a graphics file, an audio file, a multimedia file, and content available for viewing.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the server is further configured to access a bulletin board on which messages may be posted by a user from the collaborative group for viewing by other users within the collaborative group.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the server is further configured to notify the collaborative group when information related to the spreadsheet has been communicated to a server across the network.

8. A method for facilitating information exchange, the method comprising:

receiving a request from a client computer to retrieve at least one supporting document stored within at least one database, wherein a collaborative group that includes a plurality of users is defined within the at least one database, wherein the collaborative group has access to a spreadsheet operatively associated with the at least one supporting document;

retrieving the at least one supporting document from the at least one database in response to receiving the request;

providing the user at the client computer with access to the at least one supporting document which is operatively associated with the spreadsheet such that the at least one supporting document is displayed along with the spreadsheet at the client computer; and

providing the user at the client computer with a screen view that is displayed separately from the spreadsheet;

wherein the screen view conveys a submission status of the spreadsheet, provides information concerning a hyperlink to the at least one supporting document and provides a direct link to an email/message posting wizard.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the server is operatively associated with enterprise sources of information.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the collaborative group includes geographically dispersed individuals having different functional responsibilities for an enterprise.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising linking the at least one supporting document to a specific data cell from a plurality of data cells of the spreadsheet.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the at least one supporting document is selected from the group consisting of a supporting spreadsheet, a word processing document, a slide presentation, a graphics file, an audio file, a multimedia file, and content available for viewing.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising accessing a bulletin board on which messages may be posted by a user from the collaborative group for viewing by other users within the collaborative group.

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising notifying the collaborative group when information related to the spreadsheet has been communicated to a server across the network.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the screen view provides a plurality of rows of information and a name associated with the spreadsheet, wherein the information concerning the hyperlink includes an icon and wherein the name and the icon are disposed in a same row of the plurality of rows of information.

16. The method of claim 8 , wherein the screen view provides a plurality of rows of information and a name associated with the spreadsheet, wherein the information concerning the hyperlink includes an icon and wherein the name and the icon are disposed in a same row of the plurality of rows of information.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the information concerning the hyperlink is an icon.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the name, the icon and the status information are disposed in the same row of the plurality of rows of information.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the name, the icon, the status information and the direct link are disposed in the same row of the plurality of rows of information.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the information concerning the hyperlink is an icon.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the name, the icon and the status information are disposed in the same row of the plurality of rows of information.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the name, the icon, the status information and the direct link are disposed in the same row of the plurality of rows of information.
