Abstract

Several different smart stent structures are described for placement in vessel of a mammal. The stents can be advantageously used to perform measurements of the conditions in the vessel and transmit the measurements wireless out from the patient. In some embodiments, the stent performs therapy within the vessel and may be controlled with a microprocessor, which may or may not communicate wirelessly. Some implantable devices comprise a drug delivery system based, for example, on either a microelectromechanical structure or a cover that opens upon application of an electrical current. Smart devices can be used, for example, the detect deposits in a vessel, aneurysms in the vessel or other modifications of flow in the vessel.

Claims (28)

1. A stent comprising:

a support structure comprising a biocompatible material with a structure suitable for placement within a mammalian vessel without significantly blocking flow;

a sensor supported by the support structure, wherein the sensor is capable of performing a measurement of a physiological parameter;

an implantable wireless communication system in communication with the sensor in which values from the sensor can be transmitted with the wireless communication system;

a treatment transducer supported by the support structure configured to deliver a treatment response;

an implantable microprocessor with memory in communication with the sensor, the transducer, and the communication system, the implantable microprocessor controlling the treatment response based upon the measurement of the physiological parameter and a patient treatment protocol stored in the memory, wherein the microprocessor is configured to reprogram the patient treatment protocol with a new treatment protocol received through the wireless communication system; and

an implantable battery connected to the microprocessor.

2. The stent of claim 1 wherein the supports structure comprises an expandable structure with a generally cylindrical shape.

3. The stent of claim 1 wherein the supports structure comprises a structure with fasteners that can attach to a vessel wall.

4. The stent of claim 1 wherein the support structure comprises a metal.

5. The stent of claim 1 wherein the support structure comprises a polymer.

6. The stent of claim 1 wherein the communication system comprises an antenna assembled on a chip.

7. The stent of claim 1 wherein the communication system, the microprocessor and the battery are attached to the support structure.

8. The stent of claim 1 further comprising a drug delivery device with a delivery rate controlled through the microprocessor.

9. A stent comprising:

a tubular support structure comprising a biocompatible material with a structure suitable for placement within a mammalian vessel without significantly blocking flow;

a reservoir of a bioactive agent attached to the tubular support structure;

a microelectromechanical cover positioned to control the release of bioactive agent from the reservoir by being opened and closed by a microelectromechanical device; and

an implantable control system that is operably connected to the cover to control the release of the bioactive agent from the reservoir wherein the control system comprises a microprocessor with memory and a battery connected to the microprocessor, the microprocessor controlling the release of the bioactive agent based upon a measurement of a physiological parameter and a patient treatment protocol stored in the memory, wherein the microprocessor is configured to reprogram the patient treatment protocol with a new treatment protocol received through a wireless communication link.

10. The stent of claim 9 wherein the control system comprises a microelectromechanical device operably connected to the processor and mechanically controlling access to a port into the reservoir.

11. The stent of claim 9 wherein the supports structure comprises an expandable structure with a generally cylindrical shape.

12. The stent of claim 9 wherein the supports structure comprises a structure with fasteners that can attach to a vessel wall.

13. The stent of claim 9 wherein the support structure comprises a metal.

14. The stent of claim 9 wherein the support structure comprises a polymer.

15. The stent of claim 9 further comprising a communication system operably connected to the control system.

16. The stent of claim 15 wherein the communication system comprises an antenna assembled onto a chip.

17. The stent of claim 15 wherein the communication system and the control system are attached to the support structure.

18. The stent of claim 1 wherein the wireless communication system, the microprocessor and the battery are attached to an implantable controller support structure.
