Abstract

An apparatus for heat treating manufactured components using microwave energy and microwave susceptor material. Heat treating medium such as eutectic salts may be employed. A fluidized bed introduces process gases which may include carburizing or nitriding gases. The process may be operated in a batch mode or continuous process mode. A microwave heating probe may be used to restart a frozen eutectic salt bath.

Claims (22)

1. A heat treating system for a component, the system comprising:

a microwave applicator chamber;

a processing container placed within the microwave applicator chamber, the

processing container including,

a casket, the casket being thermally insulating and substantially transparent to microwave energy;

a corrosion-resistant heat treating vessel having an exterior surface, the corrosion-resistant heat treating vessel being configured to establish a space between a substantial portion of exterior surface of the corrosion-resistant heat treating vessel and the casket when the corrosion-resistant heat treating vessel is placed within the casket, and the corrosion-resistant heat treating vessel being configured to hold within it the component and a heat treating medium;

microwave susceptor material positioned in the space between the casket and the corrosion-resistant heat treating vessel so that a substantial portion of the exterior surface of the corrosion-resistant heat treating vessel is in contact with the microwave susceptor material.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the microwave susceptor material comprises a layer of microwave susceptor material bonded to the exterior surface of the corrosion-resistant heat treating vessel.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein the microwave applicator chamber has a protective entry door and a protective exit door, with the system further comprising a conveyor apparatus for moving the component into the applicator chamber through the protective entry door, then into the heat treating medium, and then out the protective exit door.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the microwave susceptor material comprises fluid microwave susceptor material filling a substantial portion of the space between the casket and the corrosion-resistant heat treating vessel, so that a substantial portion of the exterior surface of the corrosion-resistant heat treating vessel is in contact with the fluid microwave susceptor material.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the microwave applicator chamber has a protective entry door and a protective exit door, with the system further comprising a conveyor apparatus moving the component into the applicator chamber trough the protective entry door, then into the heat treating medium, and ten out the protective exit door.

6. A heat treating system for a component the system comprising:

a heat treatment block composed at least in part of a material that is a susceptor of microwaves, the heat treatment block being configured to support the component;

a conveyor apparatus configured to support the heat treatment block and the component thereon;

a microwave applicator chamber having a protective entry door and a protective exit door, the microwave applicator chamber and the protective entry door and the protective exit door being configured for passage therethrough by the conveyor apparatus supporting the heat treatment block supporting the component.

7. An apparatus for heating a reactant disposed in a material processing vessel, the apparatus comprising:

a probe incorporating microwave susceptor material;

a source of microwaves for producing microwaves directed to the microwave susceptor material;

a lowering mechanism for moving the probe proximate to the surface of the reactant.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the probe has a protective sheath for reducing corrosion of the probe by the reactant.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the probe has an opening for directing microwaves to the reactant through the opening in the probe.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 further comprising an auxiliary heating source for heating the reactant.
