Abstract

The present invention relates to a ski binding that retains a boot to a ski in at least two independent operational states. One embodiment of a ski binding includes a toe receiving member and a releasable system. The toe receiving member is configured to engage the toe portion of the boot. The releasable system is configured to couple the toe receiving member to the ski in at least two independent operational states. A first state corresponds to a state in which the toe receiving member is allowed to freely rotate with respect to the ski. The first state is particularly useful in minimizing the necessary energy output for uphill travel. A second state corresponds to a state in which the toe receiving member is locked with respect to the ski. The second state is particularly useful in high performance downhill travel. The releasable system further includes an engagement mechanism and a switching mechanism. Additional states may also be included such as a third state in which both the toe receiving member and a heel portion of the boot are fixed with respect to the ski.

Claims (43)

1. A binding configured to releasably couple a boot to a ski comprising:

a toe receiving member configured to engage a toe portion of the boot;

a releasable system configured to couple the toe receiving member to the ski in at least two independent operational states, wherein a first state corresponds to a state in which the toe receiving member is free to rotate with respect to the ski, and wherein a second state corresponds to a state in which the toe receiving member is locked with respect to the ski; and

a biasing system that includes at least two independent replaceable biasing elements, wherein the biasing elements are configured to exert an increasing biasing force against the boot as it pivots away from the ski in the second state.

2. The binding of claim 1 further includes a selectively engaged heel retention system to provide a third state in which both the toe receiving member and a heel portion of the boot are fixed with respect to the ski.

3. The binding of claim 1 , wherein the biasing system further includes:

an under-boot round flexible member which extends from the toe receiving member;

a heel throw configured to attach to a heel portion of the boot; and

wherein the at least two biasing elements are coupled to both the under-boot cable and the heel throw.

4. The binding of claim 1 , wherein the at least two biasing elements are under-boot spring cartridges.

5. The binding of claim 1 , wherein the replaceable biasing elements are hand replaceable.

6. The binding of claim 1 , wherein the replaceable biasing elements are integrated into a heel attachment system that is coupled between the toe receiving member and a heel portion of the boot.

The binding of claim 1 , wherein the releasable system further includes a switching mechanism and an engagement mechanism, and wherein the engagement mechanism is an under-boot rotational latching mechanism, and wherein the axis of rotation of the latching mechanism is substantially parallel to the ski.

The binding of claim 1 , wherein the releasable system further includes a switching mechanism and an engagement mechanism, and wherein the switching mechanism is configured to transition the releasable mechanism between the first and second state, and wherein a first force is required to switch the switching mechanism between the first and second state, and a second force is required to switch the switching mechanism between the second and first state, an wherein the first and second force are aligned in substantially the same direction.

9. A binding configured to releasably couple a boot to a ski comprising:

a toe receiving member configured to engage a toe portion of the boot;

a heel attachment system coupled to the toe receiving member and a heel portion of the boot, wherein the heel attachment system includes at least one round flexible member;

a releasable system configured to couple the toe receiving member to the ski in at least two independent operational states, wherein a first state corresponds to a state in which the toe receiving member is free to rotate with respect to the ski, and wherein a second state corresponds to a state in which the toe receiving member is locked with respect to the ski; and

a biasing system that includes at least one replaceable biasing element, wherein the biasing system is disposed on the heel attachment system, and wherein the biasing element is configured to exert an increasing biasing force against the heel portion of the boot as it pivots away from the ski in the second state.

10. The binding of claim 9 , wherein the at least one biasing element includes two under-boot spring cartridge.

11. The binding of claim 9 , wherein the at least one replaceable biasing element is hand replaceable.

12. A method for replacing a biasing element on a ski binding comprising the acts of:

providing a ski binding which releasably engages a boot to a ski in at least two independent operational states, wherein the binding includes a first state in which the boot is free to rotate with respect to the ski, and a second state in which a portion of the boot is allowed to pivot against a biasing force with respect to the ski;

providing a biasing system that includes two independent biasing elements for exerting a biasing force upon the boot as it pivots away from the ski in the second state;

removing the at least two biasing elements; and

replacing the at least two biasing elements.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the acts of removing the at least two biasing elements and replacing the at least two biasing elements can be accomplished by hand.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the acts of removing the at least two biasing elements can be accomplished without removing additional non-biasing system components.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the at least two biasing elements are spring cartridges.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the at least two biasing elements are disposed on a heel attachment system that extends from the binding to a heel portion of the boot.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the heel attachment system is disposed substantially under boot.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the ski binding includes:

a toe receiving member configured to engage the toe portion of the boot;

a releasable system configured the couple the toe receiving member to the ski in at least two independent operational states, wherein the first state corresponds to a state in which the toe receiving member and heel attachment system is free to rotate with respect to the ski, and wherein the second state corresponds to a state in which the toe receiving member is locked with respect to the ski; and

wherein the biasing system includes two replaceable biasing elements configured to exert an increasing biasing force against the boot as it pivots away from the skin in the second state.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the biasing system further includes:

an under-boot cable which extends from the toe receiving member; and

a heel throw configured to attach to a heel portion of the boot.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the ski binding comprises:

a toe receiving member configured to engage a toe portion of the boot;

a releasable system configured to couple the toe receiving member to the ski in at least two independent operational states, wherein a first state corresponds to a state in which the toe receiving member is free to rotate with respect to the ski, and wherein a second state corresponds to a state in which the toe receiving member is locked with respect to the ski, and wherein the releasable system further comprises:

a switching mechanism configured to transition the releasable mechanism between the first and second state; and

an engagement mechanism configured to engage the toe receiving member in the second state.
