Abstract

Processes for reducing color in PO3G are provided. The processes include contacting PO3G with an adsorbent and then separating the PO3G from the adsorbent by, for example, filtration. The process provides PO3G having an APHA color preferably less than about 50. The processes are desirably used for polymers having a molecular weight of about 250 to about 5000.

Claims (17)

1. A process comprising contacting PO3G having color with about 1.0 to about 5.0 weight percent of activated carbon based on the weight of the PO3G and separating the PO3G and activated carbon having an N 2 -BET surface area of at least 1400 m 2 /g, wherein the PO3G having color is obtained by polycondensing 1,3-propanediol in the presence of sulfuric acid, wherein the PO3G after contact with the activated carbon, has a APHA color of less than about 50, said PO3G having molecular weight of about 250 to about 2250.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein the color of the PO3G, after contact with the activated carbon, has a APHA color of less than about 40.

3. The process of claim 1 , wherein the color of the P03G, after contact with the activated carbon, has a APHA color of less than 30.

4. The process of claim 1 , wherein the color of the PO3G, after contact with the activated carbon, has a APHA color of less than about 20.

5. The process of claim 1 , wherein the PO3G has a molecular weight of about 1000 to about 2250.

6. The process of claim 1 , wherein the PO3G is contacted with about 1.0 about 3 weight % of the activated carbon based on the weight of the PO3G.

7. The process of claim 1 , wherein the contacting is conducted at a temperature of about 10° to about 150° C.

8. The process of claim 7 , wherein the contacting is conducted at a temperature of about 25° to about 100° C.

9. The process of claim 7 , wherein the contacting is conducted for a period of about 5 to about 60 minutes.

10. The process of claim 9 , wherein the contacting is conducted for a period of about 10 to about 30 minutes.

11. The process of claim 1 , wherein the PO3G has a APHA color, before contact with activated carbon, of at least 50.

12. The process of claim 1 , wherein the PO3G has a APHA color, before contact with activated carbon, of about 70 to about 300.

13. The process of claim 12 , wherein the APHA color, before contact with activated carbon, is about 85 to about 250.

14. The process of claim 12 , wherein the APHA color, before contact with activated carbon, is about 100 to about 200.

15. The process of claim 1 , wherein the APHA color is reduced by at least about 50%.

16. The process of claim 1 , wherein the APHA color is reduced by at least about 60%.

17. The process of claim 1 , wherein the APHA color is reduced by at least about 70%.
