Abstract

Systems, components, and methods relating to subterranean containment barriers. Laterally adjacent tubular casings having male interlock structures and multiple female interlock structures defining recesses for receiving a male interlock structure are used to create subterranean barriers for containing and treating buried waste and its effluents. The multiple female interlock structures enable the barriers to be varied around subsurface objects and to form barrier sidewalls. The barrier may be used for treating and monitoring a zone of interest.

Claims (14)

1. A reactive barrier section for a subsurface barrier wall, comprising:

a hollow elongated body defining a cavity and having at least one effluent collection portion comprising an aperture through a side wall of the hollow elongated body;

an elongated internal body received within the cavity and including at least one effluent collection portion comprising an aperture through a side wall thereof in flow communication with at least a portion of the cavity; and

at least one reactive material disposed in the elongated internal body to interact with at least some effluent entering therein.

2. The barrier section of claim 1 , wherein the effluent collection portion comprises a flow path for a liquid effluent.

3. The barrier section of claim 1 , wherein the effluent collection portion comprises a flow path for a gaseous effluent.

4. The barrier section of claim 1 , further comprising at least a second reactive material disposed in the internal body to interact with at least some effluent passing through the at least one reactive material.

5. The barrier section of claim 1 , wherein the at least one reactive material comprises a replaceable reactive slug.

6. The barrier section of claim 1 , wherein the at least one reactive material comprises a replaceable tray containing a reactive compound.

7. The barrier section of claim 1 , wherein the at least one effluent collection portion of the hollow elongated body is circumferentially aligned with the at least one effluent collection portion of the internal body.

8. The barrier section of claim 1 , wherein the at least one reactive material comprises at least one layer of reactive material.

9. The barrier section of claim 1 , further including at least one male interlock structure projecting from the side wall of the hollow elongated body, and at least one female interlock structure associated with the side wall of the hollow elongated body.

10. The barrier section of claim 1 , wherein the hollow elongated body is substantially cylindrical in transverse cross-section, and the internal body is substantially rectangular in transverse cross-section.

11. The barrier section of claim 10 , further comprising a channel defined between a portion of the side wall of the hollow elongated body and a portion of the side wall of the internal body, wherein the at least one effluent collection portion of the hollow elongated body and the at least one effluent collection portion of the elongated internal body are in communication with the channel.
