Abstract

Systems, components, and methods relating to subterranean containment barriers. Laterally adjacent tubular casings having male interlock structures and multiple female interlock structures defining recesses for receiving a male interlock structure are used to create subterranean barriers for containing and treating buried waste and its effluents. The multiple female interlock structures enable the barriers to be varied around subsurface objects and to form barrier sidewalls. The barrier may be used for treating and monitoring a zone of interest.

Claims (16)

1. A method of sealing adjacent interlocking casings, comprising:

entraining a volume of a thermoplastic sealant in at least one female interlock structure recess of a first casing section comprising a hollow elongated body;

inserting a male interlock structure of a second laterally adjacent casing section comprising a hollow elongated body into the at least one female interlocking recess; and

applying heat to the at least one female interlocking recess to cause the thermoplastic sealant to flow and create a seal between the casings.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein entraining a volume of thermoplastic sealant comprises entraining a volume of thermoplastic sealant that is less than the volume of the at least one female interlock structure recess.

3. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising reestablishing the seal in the event of a breach by reheating the at least one female interlock structure recess to cause the thermoplastic sealant to reflow and reestablish the seal.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic sealant is selected from the group comprising waxes, tars, polymers and polysiloxane.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a self-healing sealant.

6. A method of sealing adjacent interlocking casings, comprising:

entraining a volume of a thermoplastic sealant in at least one female interlock structure recess of a first casing section;

inserting a male interlock structure of a second adjacent casing section into the at least one female interlocking recess;

applying heat to the at least one female interlocking recess to cause the thermoplastic sealant to flow and create a seal between the casings; and

reestablishing the seal in the event of a breach by reheating the at least one female interlock structure recess to cause the thermoplastic sealant to reflow and reestablish the seal.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein entraining a volume of thermoplastic sealant comprises entraining a volume of thermoplastic sealant that is less than the volume of the at least one female interlock structure recess.

8. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the thermoplastic sealant is selected from the group comprising waxes, tars, polymers and polysiloxane.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a self-healing sealant.
