Abstract

Modified polysaccharide polymers for use as anti-scalant and dispersant. The polymers are useful in compositions used in aqueous systems. The modified polysaccharides are also useful in detergent formulations, water treatment, dispersants and oilfield applications and as fiberglass binders. Such applications include a modified polysaccharide having up to about 70 mole % carboxyl groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU and up to about 20 mole % aldehyde groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU. The applications can also include a blend of modified polysaccharides and other synthetic polymers.

Claims (14)

1. An aqueous system comprising one or more insoluble salts and an aqueous treatment composition comprising a polysaccharide composition comprising: at least one modified polysaccharide having of from about 1 mole % to about 70 mole % carboxyl groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU and of from about 1 mole % to about 20 mole % aldehyde groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU wherein the at least one modified polysaccharide is present in said aqueous composition in an amount of at least about 0.5 mg/L, and wherein the aqueous treatment composition further comprises at least one synthetic polymer.

2. The aqueous system of claim 1 wherein the aqueous treatment composition further comprises a blend of the at least one modified polysaccharide and at least one synthetic polymer.

3. A polysaccharide composition comprising: at least one modified polysaccharide having up to about 70 mole % carboxyl groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU and up to about 20 mole % aldehyde groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU, wherein the at least one modified polysaccharide further comprises at least one of a phosphonate moiety, a sulfonate moiety or a phosphate moiety.

4. A polysaccharide composition comprising: a blend of at least one modified polysaccharide having up to about 70 mole % carboxyl groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU and up to about 20 mole % aldehyde groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU and a monomer having at least one phosphonate moiety, at least one sulfonate moiety or at least one phosphate moiety.

5. A polysaccharide composition comprising a blend of the at least one modified polysaccharide having up to about 70 mole % carboxyl groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU and up to about 20 mole % aldehyde groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU, at least one synthetic polymer and at least one monomer having a phosphonate moiety, a sulfonate moiety or a phosphate moiety.

6. A cleaning formulation comprising a polysaccharide composition comprising: at least one modified polysaccharide having of from about 1 mole % to about 70 mole % carboxyl groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU and of from about 1 mole % to about 20 mole % aldehyde groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU, wherein the at least one modified polysaccharide polymer is present in an amount of about 0.01% to about 10% by weight of the cleaning formulation, said cleaning formulation further comprising at least one builder.

7. The cleaning formulation of claim 6 wherein the at least one builder is a phosphorus-based and/or a carbonate builder.

8. The cleaning formulation of claim 6 further comprising at least one surfactant.

9. The cleaning formulation of claim 8 wherein the at least one surfactant is at least non-ionic and/or anionic surfactant.

10. The cleaning formulation of claim 6 further comprising one or more synthetic polymers.

11. A binder-coated fiberglass mat comprising fiberglass mat coated with a polysaccharide binder composition comprising: at least one modified polysaccharide having of from about 1 mole % to about 70 mole % carboxyl groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU and of from about 1 mole % to about 20 mole % aldehyde groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU wherein said at least one modified polysaccharide is present in an amount effective to bond glass fibers together with said binder.

12. A cement composition comprising a base cement and a polysaccharide composition comprising: at least one modified polysaccharide having of from about 1 mole % to about 70 mole % carboxyl groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU and of from about 1 mole % to about 20 mole % aldehyde groups per mole of polysaccharide ASU.

13. The aqueous system of claim 1 further comprising a water treatment chemical.

14. The aqueous system of claim 13 wherein said water treatment chemical is a corrosion inhibitor.
