Abstract

A lancet integrated test element (LIT) includes an incision forming member that has a cutting end configured to form an incision in tissue. A test element is attached to the incision forming member to test fluid from the incision. The test element has a sampling end with a sample opening through which the fluid is collected. The test element is bendable from a first state where the cutting end of the incision forming member is retracted from the sampling end of the test element to a second state where at least a portion of the cutting extends past the sampling end of the test element to form the incision in the tissue.

Claims (51)

1. An integrated device, comprising:

an incision forming member having a cutting end configured to form an incision in tissue;

a test element attached to the incision forming member to test fluid from the incision;

the test element having a sampling end with a sample opening through which the fluid is collected; and

the test element being bendable from a first state where the cutting end of the incision forming member is retracted from the sampling end of the test element to a second state where at least a portion of the cutting extends past the sampling end of the test element to form the incision in the tissue.

2. The integrated device of claim 1 , wherein the incision forming member comprises a lancet.

3. The integrated device of claim 2 , wherein the lancet has a rib to stiffen the lancet.

4. The integrated device of claim 3 , wherein:

the rib extends to the cutting end; and

the rib at the cutting end defines a u-shaped channel for forming the incision as a u-shaped flap for promoting bleeding.

5. The integrated device of claim 1 , wherein the test element includes an electrochemical test strip.

6. The integrated device of claim 5 , wherein:

the electrochemical test strip comprises an electrode system with one or more contacts; and

the incision forming member includes an attachment portion that is attached to the electrochemical test strip proximal to the contacts to prevent bending of the contacts as the electrochemical test strip bends.

7. The integrated device of claim 1 , wherein:

the test element has a connection end that is opposite the sampling end;

the lancet is attached to the connection end of the test element; and

the lancet extends from the connection end to the sampling end of the test element.

8. The integrated device of claim 1 , wherein the test element has a laminar structure that comprises:

a base substrate;

a cover layer; and

a spacer layer having a sample notch sandwiched between the base substrate and the cover layer to define a sample chamber that has the sample opening.

9. The integrated device of claim 1 , wherein the test element has an arched shape when bent into the second state.

10. The integrated device of claim 1 , wherein:

the incision forming member comprises means for forming the incision in the tissue; and

the test element comprises means for testing the fluid from the incision.

11. The integrated device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a protective sheet, the lancet being sandwiched between the test element and the protective sheet for preventing the test element from bending prior to use, the protective sheet is configured to be pulled from the test element to allow the test element to bend during lancing.

12. The integrated device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a protective band wrapped around the test element and the incision forming member to prevent the test element from bending prior to use.

13. The integrated device of claim 1 , wherein the test element is resilient to return to the first state after being bent to the second state.

14. The integrated device of claim 7 , wherein the incision forming member from the connection end of the test element to the cutting end is rigid.

15. An integrated device, comprising:

a test element configured to test fluid from an incision in tissue, the test element having a sampling end with a sample opening through which the fluid is collected;

an incision forming member having a cutting end configured to form the incision in the tissue, the incision forming member being directly attached to the lancet in a laminated configuration, the cutting end of the incision forming member being detached from the sampling end of the test element to permit bending of the test element;

the incision forming member being rigid;

the test element being bendable from a first state where the cutting end of the incision forming member is retracted from the sampling end of the test element to a second state where at least a portion of the cutting extends past the sampling end of the test element to form the incision in the tissue; and

wherein the test element is resilient to return to the first state after being bent to the second state.

16. An integrated device, comprising:

a test element configured to test fluid from an incision in tissue, the test element having a sampling end with a sample opening through which the fluid is collected;

an incision forming member having a cutting end configured to form the incision in the tissue and an attachment portion where the incision forming member is secured to the test element, the incision forming member being rigid from the attachment portion to the cutting end; and

wherein the test element is configured to bend between the sampling end and where the attachment portion of the incision forming member is secured to the test element to extend at least a portion of the cutting end of the incision forming member from a first state where the portion of the cutting end is retracted from the sampling end to a second state where the portion of the cutting end extends past the sampling end of the test element to form the incision in the tissue.

17. The integrated device of claim 16 , wherein:

the test element includes an electrochemical test strip; and

the incision forming member includes a lancet.

18. The integrated device of claim 16 , wherein the incision forming member has a rib to stiffen the incision forming member.

19. The integrated device of claim 16 , wherein:

the test element has a connection end that is opposite the sampling end, the connection end being configured to couple to a meter;

the attachment portion of the incision forming member is secured to the connection end of the test element to prevent bending of the connection end; and

the lancet extends from the connection end to the sampling end of the test element.

20. The integrated device of claim 16 , wherein the test element is resilient to substantially straighten after being bent.
