Abstract

An apparatus for replacing lost PSTN data in a packet network and for generating variable power white noise, includes a lost packet detection unit ( 402 ) for detecting lost data packets, a data processing unit ( 404 ) for producing in response a lost data output indicating when replacement data needed, data playout unit ( 408 ) or data replacement unit ( 406 ), each may be implemented as a variable power white noise generator (FIG. 3 ) to generate replacement data by reusing data stored in an extended playback buffer, and placing the re-used replacement data on an external network.

Claims (55)

1. A communication method, said method including:

receiving a communication that uses one of a plurality of detectable communication types at an interworking device;

detecting said communication type of said communication with a lost packet detection unit;

identifying an unrecoverable data element in said communication with the lost packet detection unit;

generating replacement data based at least in part on said communication type with a replacement data generator, said generating including selecting data from a selected range from a set of ranges, said set of ranges including a first range and a second range; and

substituting said unrecoverable data element in said communication based at least in part on said replacement data with a data processing unit.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first range and said second range are non-identical.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first range and said second range overlap.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said first range and second range has a cardinality of one.

5. A communication method, said method including:

receiving a communication that uses one of a plurality of communication types at an interworking device;

detecting said communication type of said communication at a lost packet detection unit;

selecting a selected value from a plurality of values available for selection based at least in part on said communication type with a data playout unit; and

generating data utilized to substitute for unrecoverable data in said communication based at least in part on said selected value with a replacement data generator.

6. A communication method, said method including:

receiving a communication that uses one of a plurality of communication types at an interworking device;

detecting said communication type of said communication at a lost packet detection unit;

selecting a selected range from a set of ranges available for selection based at least in part on said communication type with a data playout unit; and

generating data utilized to substitute for unrecoverable data in said communication based at least in part on said selected range with a replacement data generator.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein said selected value is selected pseudo-randomly.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein said selected value is selected sequentially.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein said selected value is selected based on prior data.

10. The method of claim 5 , wherein said selected value is selected based on a desired output power level.

11. The method of claim 5 , wherein said selected value is selected based at least in part on measured signal values.

12. The method of claim 5 , wherein said selected value is selected independently from a sign value.

13. A system for generating replacement data, said system including:

a magnitude value generator configured to provide a magnitude value based at least in part on a communication type of a communication;

a sign value generator configured to provide a sign value based at least in part on a pseudo-random sequence; and

a replacement value generator configured to determine a data value based at least in part on said magnitude value and at least in part on said sign value, the data value being used as replacement data in the communication.

14. A system for generating replacement data, said system including:

a magnitude value generator that provides a magnitude value-based at least in part on a communication type of a communication;

a sign value generator that provides a sign value, based at least in part on a pseudo-random sequence; and

a replacement value generator that determines a data value based at least in part on said magnitude value and at least in part on said sign value, the data value being used as replacement data in the communication.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein said magnitude value is selected from a range of available values, said range based at least in part on said communication type.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein said magnitude value generator is independently controlled from said sign value generator.

17. A method for generating data, said method including:

receiving a communication that uses one of a plurality of communication types at an interworking device;

detecting said communication type of said communication at a lost packet detection unit;

generating a pseudo-random sign bit with a shift register;

determining a magnitude value based at least in part on said communication type with the shift register;

generating replacement data based at least in part on said sign bit and at least in part on said magnitude value with a replacement data generator; and

replacing unrecoverable data in said communication based at least in part on said replacement data with a data playout unit.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein said sign bit is generated utilizing a pseudo-random sequence.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein said sign bit is generated utilizing a linear-feedback shift register.

20. A communication system, said system including:

a data generator configured to generate replacement data to replace unrecoverable data in a communication, the data generator being configured to select a white noise representation as the replacement data with one of plural multi-bit registers controlled by a register controller, the register controller being configured to adjust magnitude portions of the multi-bit registers.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein said white noise representation is based at least in part on a communication type.

22. The system of claim 20 , wherein said white noise representation is based at least in part on a pseudo-random number.

23. The system of claim 20 , wherein said white noise representation is based at least in part on a value with a pseudo-random sign bit.

24. The system of claim 20 , wherein the register controller is configured to adjust the magnitude portions independently.

25. The system of claim 20 , wherein the register controller is configured to adjust the magnitude portions at call setup.

26. The system of claim 20 , wherein the register controller is configured to adjust the magnitude portions after call setup based on measured signal values.

27. The system of claim 20 , wherein the register controller is configured to adjust the magnitude portions depending on the desired output power level of the white noise representation.

28. The system of claim 20 , further including:

a multiplexer configured to coordinate assignment of each multi-bit register to a respective outgoing time slot.
