Abstract

A printhead assembly for an ink jet printer includes an elongate carrier. An elongate ink supply structure defines at least one longitudinally extending ink passage and at least one set of holes in fluid communication with the at least one ink passage. The ink supply structure is mounted in the carrier and extends a length of the carrier. A plurality of printhead modules is mounted in the carrier on the ink supply structure. Each printhead module includes an ink distribution structure in fluid communication with the holes of the ink supply structure and an elongate printhead integrated circuit mounted on the ink supply structure to receive ink from the ink supply structure. A plurality of flexible printed circuit boards connects to respective printhead integrated circuits to supply the printhead integrated circuits with power and data.

Claims (11)

1. A printhead assembly for an ink jet printer, the printhead assembly comprising:

an elongate carrier;

an elongate ink supply structure that defines at least one longitudinally extending ink passage and at least one set of holes in fluid communication with the at least one ink passage, the ink supply structure being mounted in the carrier and extending a length of the carrier;

a plurality of printhead modules mounted in the carrier on the ink supply structure, each printhead module including an ink distribution structure in fluid communication with the holes of the ink supply structure and an elongate printhead integrated circuit mounted on the ink supply structure to receive ink from the ink supply structure; and

a plurality of flexible printed circuit boards connected to respective printhead integrated circuits to supply the printhead integrated circuits with power and data.

2. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which the elongate carrier is in the form of a metal channel with a floor and a pair of opposed sidewalls, the elongate ink supply structure being positioned on the floor of the channel.

3. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 2 , which includes busbars extending along the floor of the channel, each flexible printed circuit board extending from its associated printhead integrated circuit to the busbars.

4. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which the elongate ink supply structure is an extrusion of an elastomeric material.

5. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which each ink distribution structure includes a first ink path defining structure that defines at least one first ink path formation on one side and at least one set of ink inlet openings on an opposite side in fluid communication with the at least one first ink path formation, the first ink path defining structure being engageable with the ink supply structure so that each ink inlet opening is in fluid communication with a respective hole of the ink supply structure and a second ink path defining structure that defines at least one second ink path formation on one side and at least one set of exit holes on an opposite side in fluid communication with the at least one second ink path formation, the first and second ink path defining structures being engaged with each other so that first and second ink path formations define at least one tortuous ink path.

6. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 5 , in which each printhead integrated circuit has a plurality of ink inlets so that each ink inlet is in fluid communication with a respective exit hole of the second ink path structure.

7. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 5 , further comprising a film layer that is interposed between the first and second ink path defining structures, the film layer defining a number of openings for the passage of ink through the film layer.
