Abstract

A method an apparatus for coating prostheses via contact patterning with an applicator. Applicators can include rollers, tampons, and ribbons. Coating materials include a variety of substances including polymers and therapeutic agents.

Claims (38)

1. A coating device, comprising:

a housing;

means for carrying coating material disposed in the housing; and

an applicator, disposed within the housing, and moveably positionable between a first position to contact the carrying means and a second position,

wherein the applicator is adapted to apply the coating material by transferring the coating material from the carrying means, and

wherein the applicator comprises at least one roller adapted to contact the carrying means and transfer coating material to an exterior surface of a prosthesis to be coated.

2. The coating device of claim 1 , wherein the second position is predetermined so as to contact an exterior surface of a prosthesis to be coated when the prosthesis is positioned within the housing.

3. The coating device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one roller is adapted to rotate over, and be in contact with, an exterior surface of a prosthesis to be coated.

4. The coating device of claim 3 , wherein the at least one roller is adapted to contact, at a same time, the carrying means and an exterior surface of a prosthesis to be coated.

5. A coating device, comprising:

a housing;

means for carrying coating material disposed in the housing; and

an applicator, disposed within the housing, and moveably positionable to contact the carrying means and an exterior surface of a prosthesis to be coated,

wherein the applicator is adapted to apply the coating material to the exterior surface of a prosthesis to be coated by transferring the coating material from the carrying means to a prosthesis when a prosthesis to be coated is located within the housing, and

wherein the applicator comprises at least one roller adapted to contact the carrying means and adapted to transfer coating material to an exterior surface of a prosthesis to be coated.

6. The coating device of claim 5 , wherein the at least one roller is adapted to rotate over, and be in contact with, an exterior surface of a prosthesis to be coated.

7. The coating device of claim 6 , further comprising:

biasing means for urging the at least one roller away from an exterior surface of a prosthesis to be coated.

8. The coating device of claim 6 , wherein the at least one roller is positionable in a first position so as to contact an exterior surface of a prosthesis to be coated and in a second position so as to not contact an exterior surface of a prosthesis to be coated.

9. The coating device of claim 6 , wherein:

the prosthesis to be coated is a stent mounted on a balloon portion of a delivery catheter, and

wherein the at least one roller is adapted to contact an exterior surface of the stent without contacting the balloon portion of the delivery catheter.

10. The coating device of claim 6 , wherein the prosthesis to be coated comprises a stent mounted on a balloon portion of a delivery catheter disposed in the housing,

wherein the at least one roller is adapted to contact an exterior surface of the stent without contacting the balloon portion of the delivery catheter.

11. The coating device of claim 6 , wherein the carrying means comprise a sponge containing the coating material.

12. A coating device, comprising:

a housing;

a stent mounted on a balloon portion of a delivery catheter disposed in the housing, the stent having an exterior surface;

means for carrying coating material, the carrying means disposed in the housing; and

an applicator, disposed within the housing, and moveably positionable to contact the carrying means and the exterior surface of the stent,

wherein the applicator is adapted to apply the coating material to the exterior surface of the stent by transferring the coating material from the carrying means, and

wherein the applicator comprises at least one roller adapted to contact the carrying means and adapted to transfer coating material to the exterior surface of the stent.

13. The coating device of claim 12 , wherein the at least one roller is adapted to rotate over, and be in contact with, the exterior surface of the stent.

14. The coating device of claim 13 , further comprising:

biasing means for urging the at least one roller away from the exterior surface of the stent.

15. The coating device of claim 13 , wherein the at least one roller is positionable in a first position so as to contact the exterior surface of the stent and in a second position so as to not contact the exterior surface of the stent.

16. The coating device of claim 13 , wherein the at least one roller is adapted to contact the exterior surface of the stent without contacting the balloon portion of the delivery catheter.

17. The coating device of claim 13 , wherein the carrying means comprise a sponge containing the coating material.
