Abstract

A composite fabric formed by depositing a web of nanofibers electroblown from a first polymer onto a first support web comprising fibers of larger average diameter than the nanofibers spun from a compatible material, in the absence of an adhesive between the webs, and solvent-bonding the webs together.

Claims (18)

1. A composite fabric comprising a web of electroblown polymeric nanofibers solvent-bonded to a first support web comprising fibers of larger average diameter than the nanofibers and spun from a material compatible with said nanofibers, in the absence of an adhesive between the webs and wherein the nanofibers are solvent-bonded to the support web by the processing solvent from which the polymeric nanofibers are blown and which is entrained in the nanofiber web.

2. The composite fabric of claim 1 , wherein the nanofiber polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyamides, polyesters, polyurethanes, polyvinylidene fluoride and polyvinyl alcohol, and the support web comprises fibers selected from the group consisting of polyamides, polyesters, polyurethanes, polyvinylidene fluoride, polyvinyl alcohol, natural fibers and combinations thereof.

3. The composite fabric of claim 1 , wherein the compatible material is polymeric.

4. The composite fabric of claim 2 , wherein both the nanofibers and the support web fibers are polyamides.

5. The composite fabric of claim 3 , wherein the nanofiber polymer and the polymer fibers of said support web are different polymers.

6. The composite fabric of claim 3 , wherein the support web comprises a combination of different polymeric fibers.

7. The composite fabric of claim 6 , wherein the support web comprises multiple layers of different polymeric fibers.

8. The composite fabric of claim 1 , wherein the support web is a woven fabric or a nonwoven web.

9. The composite fabric of claim 8 , wherein the support web is a nonwoven web selected from the group consisting of spunbond fibers, meltblown fibers, carded fibers, wet laid fibers and combinations thereof.

10. The composite fabric of claim 1 , wherein the nanofiber web comprises polyamide nanofibers having average fiber diameters between about 200 nm and 500 nm, having a basis weight of at least 2.5 g/m 2 , and the support web comprises at least one layer of spunbond fibers.

11. The composite fabric of claim 1 , wherein the nanofiber web comprises polyamide nanofibers having average fiber diameters between about 200 nm and 500 nm, having a basis weight of at least 2.5 g/m 2 , and the support web comprises a bi-layer structure of carded polyamide fibers and carded polyester fibers, and wherein the nanofiber web is solvent-bonded to the carded polyamide fiber layer.

12. The composite fabric of claim 1 , further comprising a second support web comprising fibers of larger average diameter than the nanofibers spun from a material compatible with said nanofibers, solvent-bonded to said nanofiber web opposite the first support web.

13. The composite fabric of claim 12 , wherein said first and second support webs are chemically the same.

14. The composite fabric of claim 2 , wherein said nanofibers are polyamide and the support web comprises a blend of PET and natural fibers.

15. The composite fabric of claim 14 , wherein said natural fibers are cellulose.

16. The composite fabric of claim 2 , wherein said nanofibers are polyamide and the support web fibers are all natural fibers.

17. The composite fabric of claim 16 , wherein said natural fibers are cellulose.

18. The composite fabric of claim 2 , wherein said nanofibers are polyvinyl alcohol and said support web comprises a blend of polyvinyl alcohol fibers and rayon fibers.
