Abstract

Described here are devices for altering the flow of air in a respiratory cavity such as the mouth and nostrils of the nose. These methods and devices may be useful for affecting a physiologic benefit in patients suffering from a variety of medical diseases, particularly those that may benefit from “pursed-lip” breathing and non-invasive ventilation, such as COPD, heart failure, sleep apnea, and other medical disorders. The devices are typically removable devices that may be placed over or in a respiratory cavity to increase resistance to airflow within the respiratory cavity. Resistance to expiration may be selectively increased relative to inspiration. Removable oral and removable nasal devices are described. Oral and nasal devices that filter inhaled airflow of debris and allergens are also provided. A nasal device that increases patency of the nares is also provided.

Claims (28)

1. A nasal respiratory device configured to be secured in communication with both of a subject's nostrils, the device comprising:

an airflow resistor configured to inhibit exhalation through both nostrils more than inhalation through both nostrils, wherein the airflow resistor comprises a flap valve; and

an adhesive holdfast.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the airflow resistor comprises a plurality of flaps.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive holdfast is configured to secure the device over the subject's nostrils so that the airflow resistor is positioned outside of the subject's nostrils.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured so that it does not substantially contact the inside of the subject's nostrils.

5. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an opening through the device that is open to allow airflow during both exhalation and inhalation.

6. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an active agent.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the active agent comprises an odorant.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive holdfast is flexible.

9. The device of claim 1 , further wherein the device is configured to communicate with a source of respiratory gas.

10. The device of claim 1 , further wherein the device is configured to communicate with a cannula.

11. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an opening forming a passageway through the device that is configured to communicate with a subject's nasal cavity, wherein the airflow resistor is secured across the passageway, further wherein the airflow resistor is configured to open from an attachment site that not on the periphery of the passageway.

12. A kit comprising:

a nasal respiratory device configured to be secured in communication with both of a subject's nostrils, the device comprising an airflow resistor configured to inhibit exhalation through both nostrils more than inhalation through both nostrils, wherein the airflow resistor comprises a flap valve; and an adhesive holdfast; and

instructions on the use of the respiratory device.

13. The kit of claim 12 , wherein the nasal respiratory device is packaged for single use.

14. A nasal respiratory device configured to be secured in communication with both of a subject's nostrils, the device comprising:

an airflow resistor configured to inhibit exhalation through both nostrils more than inhalation through both nostrils, wherein the airflow resistor comprises a plurality of flaps; and

an adhesive holdfast.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the adhesive holdfast is configured to secure the device over the subject's nostrils so that the airflow resistor is positioned outside of the subject's nostrils.

16. The device of claim 14 , wherein the device is configured so that it does not substantially contact the inside of the subject's nostrils.

17. The device of claim 14 , further comprising an opening through the device that is open to allow airflow during both exhalation and inhalation.

18. The device of claim 14 , further comprising an active agent.

19. The device of claim 18 , wherein the active agent comprises an odorant.

20. The device of claim 14 , wherein the adhesive holdfast is flexible.

21. The device of claim 14 , further wherein the device is configured to communicate with a cannula.

22. The device of claim 14 , further comprising an opening forming a passageway through the device that is configured to communicate with a subject's nasal cavity, wherein the airflow resistor is secured across the passageway, further wherein the airflow resistor is configured to open from an attachment site that not on the periphery of the passageway.
